I have found a used Max II with 28 hours on it with quite a few accessories,tracks,plow etc.Can anyone tell me anything about the Max? All my research has been on the Argo so I have to start my research all over again. :-) It looks like a nice machine.I don't know what year or horsepower yet as I am awaiting a reply.Are the Max's set up to handle tracks and would there be things to look out for on one that has had tracks and a plow on it? Any information gratefully received. Thanks |

28 hours is just starting to get broken in, so the basic tighten and service woould be in order. |

I have heard some really positive things about the Max,some of them even from the Argo dealer.It was of his opinion that Max had a more advanced steering system.He believed a Max was more difficult to drive but that the drive system was superior.I'm going to check out your site Jerry. Thanks |

Like many things we get enthused about, the more you learn, the more we realize there is to learn. Check out the Maxes and Argos, even after you buy one, years later you'll be discovering things about them both. |

The Max does not have a high and low range as does the Argo.How much faster ground speed does the Max have at its minimum ground speed as compared to the Argo in low range? Funny how as the years have passed I now am more concerned how slow something will go instead of how fast. :-) |

The max just uses more belt slippage at low speeds in the rough stuff. The argo needs low range sometimes due to the steering effort of it's tranny. It is nice to have when you want to crawl, and also downhill engine braking. |

Eldon you can go as slow as you want by using the throttle with belt slip as Roger mentioned and not having the drive clutch squeeze tight on the belt also you can vary the amount of slip in the transmission with the control levers. You can pull back slightly on the sticks and rev the engine to max speed and still just crawl. By pulling back on the sticks you are letting the transmission slip. It is designed to do this. So by slipping you can get very smooth turns and a lot of control on difficult terrain.
If you go up a hill that is to steep don't try to shift gears and back down the hill. Give the machine some throttle and pull back lightly on the sticks and let the transmission slip and you can gently back down a hill at your own pace.
As Roger said the Argo needs two speeds to be able to turn. I had a Vanguard II with the 16hp B&S. I could not turn it in high gear. I almost always drove it in low gear. I only shifted to high when going down a gravel road. Additionally Argo has different gear ratios in their transmission and this can be identified by a couple of letters stamped on top of the transmission. |

Hi Argohunter: It is a 2003, 23 hp Kohler Command,called a model 850T. |
