Just tested a LIL CRITTER and was pleased at how this ATV operates .It looks like it is built heavy enough,and is very simple in design.I liked how it crested over hills,and overall stability.For just two passengers and the money I think I will buy one for my daughter. Has anyone else tested one of these? What do you think of it?

Made a deal on a new AV-4, and am going to pick it up next weekend. I thought the price was right and the options were very reasonable.We are getting a winch , handrails,and a top kit. This is mainly for our daughter but I will test it occasionally and let you know how it performs. Eddie

In the short ride I had at the dealers,the machine had good power with two riders.This is the one with 16 hp. The trans has engine braking ability,so going down hills was easy. The trans skids well with the enclosed wet brakes.The whole machine is built heavy enough with the steel frame and few adjustments.Two on chains and two on trans.It operates like Argo,straight going just give it gas,no pushing forward on sticks. To turn just pull stick back to lock up that side. The only thing that I could see is that it is lacking some ground clearance. The drain plug comes down to a trough in the back. I dont think that will cause to much problem though. I will test it more in the next few weeks, as I think I will put a snow plow on it and do some light grading. Eddie

Just to let anyone wanting a update , I added a couple of tail lights,it was way to dark when night riding and backing up. There was a place when riding in rough terrain your back would hit the fiberglass backrest,one call to the factory and they sent a pad that took care of the problem. The throttle return spring was way to stiff, caused hand cramping.Factory sent a new spring. Brenda and Don at LIL CRITTER have been very helpful in straitening out any problems.(Very minor problems).The only thing I am a little dissapointed in is the enclosed top.It isnt sewed correctly and doesnt fit to well. LIL CRITTER doesnt make thier own tops and I will have to call the manufacturer. Last thing is the trans growls when making turns, but I think that will get better as it breaks in.In all it is a good quality amphibious atv that is very affordable. I will keep updating as I put more hours on it. All factory replacement parts were no charge...

Thanks for thre update Eddie. My wife really likes the looks of the LIL CRITTER. How does it crest steep pointed hills and go over logs or falled trees? How is it in the water? From what I have seen they all have different tires and I'm curious how they perform in water. Lights in back are a good addition. I like rear facing white lights. What was the price on the top? In my opinion the tops offered by most amnufacturers are over priced.

Performance is pretty good,water is as good as my Bigfoot.I havent tried to cross to big of log yet. I dont think it will do as good as the Argo in that area.I have the 25" rawhide III tires they dropped the bar and knobbie combo tire.I think the bigfoot tire is still available,but I would want the 23 hp. motor. It crests hills better because it dont pivot over the top,it just rolls over the top. The top I got at cost wich was still 450.00 I guess it is supposed to sell for 580.00 the other options were reasonable. The only other thing I have done is to set engine to 3950 rpm. to gain a little more speed.Jerry, we went to Grand Rivers KY. to meet the dealer out of tenn. when we went thru Marion I thought about Little Egypt or Land between the lakes.How about a ride some time this spring?

Sure Eddie I can do a ride this spring. Little Egypt is nice. I have not been to Turkey bay down at LBL. I can go just about anywhere if I can get away from work. I've been wanting to take a week and do a trip over to Evarts KY or put together something for Moab. When I get the new machine in I'll be more confident in it's ability. Does your AV4 have the 16 hp briggs and how do you like that Tuff Torque transmission/transaxle? Besides noise does it handle like the Argo?

Yes it has the 16 hp. The tuff torque seems ok, it shifts smoothly. Iwent up a steep hill the other day and one side started to spin ,so I braked that side a little and all 4 spun. There is a standard diff lock that LIL CRITTER does not hook up, Im already thinking of a lever to use this feature.The only difference is that it takes more effort to steer because of being a manual brake vs. a hydrallic setup like Argo. If we can get a trip to LBL you will not be dissapointed, we have went once a year for the last 8 years,and Im always ready to go back.

LBL is only arond 100 miles away from where I live so I need to head down there even if it is just for a day. I might try and get down there within the next few months.

The rules require a helmet, does this apply to roll bar equipped vehicles?

Jerry, Sorry but I have been gone for a couple of days.As long as you have a rollbar and seatbelts you dont need a helmet.Most of the places I have been to dont require a helmet if you have these items.Parks include, Badlands in Indiana. LBL in Kentucky. Rockport in Illinios. Deepwater in Missouri. Haspin Acres in Indiana.

Thanks Eddie. Evarts Ky is like Moab, except they let you ride the ATV's through town. It is an old coal mining area that went bust so to get people coming back they opened up the whole county to ATV's and developed a massive trail system. I've been wanting to set up a group ride but have not got much interest. I think since it is not well known people shy away and stick with haspin. What I like is being able to park the truck or trailer in town, even get a hotel room, then ride the atv everywhere after that. To me sounds like a fantastic place to set up a group ride. A little tough to get to for some people because it is not off an interstate but should be good for a nice long trip.

Just another note on a modification I've made on the AV-4. The TuffTorq trans. has a differential lock that is standard equiptment but Lil Critter does not hook it up.Instead of making complicated bellcrank linkages,I mounted a mini air cyl. with spring return feature to the lock. I next mounted a 12V mini compressor on the frame(once these compressors are stripped out of the case they are in they are very small).Wired a toggle switch into dash. Now I have the first AV-4 with an air locker. Full 4 wheel drive when needed. There are a few times I think this will come in handy, when you dont want to manipulate the levers to lock both sides. It works in the garage when i jack one side up make it spin then fip the switch. Now we will see how it works in real situations. Eddie

Jerry, we are going to try for LBL sometime this spring.We went to Rockport New years day and had a ball.This was the first ride I have been on since last year.Most of my riding is on my own property.I'm always up for something new though,such as Little Egypt.This seems to be your home park, as Rockport is mine.Lets keep throwing things around and maybe we can get something going. Keep me up to date on LBL. Right now my work is bouncing around to different days and different shifts so I don't know what I am working much more than a week out. But the good side is with enough notice I can request specific days to not be scheduled. I have not been to LE this year. I think I will buy an annual membership which will allow me access everyday instead of just weekends.

Evarts, Ky sounds like a nice place to to have group ride. I will hopefully have my Max 2 running this summer and want to take my wife to an event for her to see how much fun they are. For those of us who do not own campers , this would be great.

Hello Derek,

I think it would be a fantastic place for a big group ride. Early summer would be nice weather and the whole county is just about open to aatv's and to be able to drive into town would be very convenient. ATV Nation has their 2006 national ride in neighboring Harlan starting on June 24th, 2006. www.harlancounty.com has some more information on the area.

Well I spent 7 hrs. at Rockport today,I took the AV-4 again.I am still impressed with where this thing will go.I only stayed away from the steepest of hills,I went thru any mud hole I came to,I had to make a on trail brake adjustment,5 minute adjustment.The only thing I still wory about is the underbody protection.I made a small skidplate for the drain trough,but I think the whole underbody needs one. The factory says they have one now so I am going to order one.Late in the day I noticed a little brake fade ,it took a little more effort on the sticks to lock the brakes.All in all I still think the AV-4 is a very capable AATV for the money. Thats the report for now, Eddie

What are you wanting advise on ? Maintenance or operation? I have put mine thru the paces and have found the strengths and weaknesses.I dont use it often but have about 35 hours on it now. I have all the options and the 16 hp engine. Eddie

Eddie is an experienced Argo owner and AV-4 owner. He has posted some modifications he made to his machine. When he gets on here I am sure he can give you some very sound advice and recommendations.

If this is your first amphibious atv practice driving it and read the owners manual and practice safe operation. Feel free to contribute to this discussion board and ask questions.

The last ride at Ruffcorn Farm I rode with 5 four wheelers.I was getting left behind ,so I bent the governor tang so I can now rev to 4350.I kept up a little better and I went everyplace they went,They couldnt say the same.I was a little rougher on machine than I like to ride but it performed well and nothing got tore up.As for sheer comfort and ease of operation I like my Bigfoot better.

How do you compair the steering of the AV-4 to the Argo bigfoot

I put a gun rack on the bar behind the seat. I need to find a place to put another gun rack and a place to put some tools

any ideas

where are your post on your modifcations ?

I have the 23hp

what weaknesses have you found
I got it to get me in and out of the duck woods.

John,So far I have modified the rpm,s,added two tail lights,made a way to make the differential lock functional,added a rear bumper.Cut the rear mesh to add a recessed toolbox.Pulled the precleaner off and added a better spark plug.I also added a 12 volt accessory port.After breaking in the machine the noise is gone from the trans. The biggest weakness is there is no protection on the drain trough.(i have already cracked the fiberglass there)But have made a skidplate to protect the area from any more damage.I still think a full skidplate should be offered.It also takes more effort to turn the AV-4 than a Bigfoot(Manual steering vs.Hydralic).I am glad you got the 23 hp. as i have found ways to bog the 16 badly,Mainly thick mud and turning when going up hills will suck the motor right down.Where are you locatedand what dealer did you buy from ? I live in the Memphis Tenn area. I called Brenda and Don at LIL CRITTER to ask some questions they had a demo, one of their dealers had returned with the 23hp with only 4hrs. The dealer it came from had backed it into the trailer and it had a small crack on the back corner finder that they had repaired. I went to LA and looked at it. They gave me a great deal so I bought it.

what did you make the skid plate out of. and how did you mount it

John, I actually bought mine from a dealer in Tenn.,he was coming toward Illinois and we met in Grand Rivers, Ky. Dont hesitate to call Brenda and Don ,they have been most helpful any time I have called. The dealer I bought from had already made a repair to the same area on another machine he sold.I made a stainless plate and bent the angle of the trough,I split the front and formed it to come up on the flat bottom, the rear I just rounded up a little to the drain plug. I drilled holes thru the bottom of machine into plate and bolted it using round head bolts.This took care of that area, but I would like a full plate because when crossing logs the bottom between the front and rear tires takes all the weight.I have the fiberglass rubbed pretty hard in that area (no holes yet). With the skidplate on drain trough area I feel alot better though when the bottom drags. Eddie

how thick plate did you use

Don told me that it has a pice of thick plywood samwiched it the fiber glass

I will try to get pics of it ,it is 1/8 plate.The skid plate he is talking about is only in the front of the machine.(The area just in front of your feet when you are sitting in machine).There is no protection under the machine except the body material itself.I am also thinking of Rhino Lining the bottom of machine for a little more protection.The bottom is definitely prone to damage.I have also called Don to suggest a full skidplate.Did you get any accessorys with it?

Ran the AV-4 all day Sunday,I was suprised it got around better than the Bigfoot did.The machine is lighter with 4-wheel drive.The bigfoot is heavier with 6 wheel drive ,same tires on both machines.The AV-4 spun the tires and picked up speed,the same test on bigfoot was to much throttle and machine started to shake from side to side and didnt pick up speed.The ride was definitely better in the AV-4 but for all around comfort and ease of operation Bigfoot is hard to beat.Does anyone notice the noise inside Argo really goes up when top is on.The same can be said about the AV-4 also,Does the noise go up in the Max machines also?

Eddie, were you riding in the snow? My Conquest does the side to side super shake thing also and it gets quite violent at times. That nice feature along with the loud cab noise is all thanks to the old Argo trans that I've hated since day one. The Frontier's trans never shakes the machine since the differential doesn't put one side in neutral nearly as easy. The Frontier trans also runs completely silent where the trans in my Conquest is often louder than the engine. I have run Maxs with tops as well as the Avenger EFI. The sound is different when enclosed but no louder or annoying. I think the screaming of the old Argo trans is what puts a person over the edge.

I like thier choice of engine in the AV4, the 23hp Briggs is a real runner. I might have to give it a try soon. It might be good fun but I don't know if I could sell something with no name behind it. Looks like they have a good trans. Do you think it will be durable and reliable? Skid steers are hard on drivetrains. Does it work well, steering and brakes? Looks like it is a differential.

Yes,I was in snow,but I have got the shake thing in the sand at Badlands also.I have had machines with runamuks as well as rawhides do this.The trans on AV-4 is the same as Argo,except it is a enclosed wet brake.Tuff-Torq makes the JD Gator trans as well as trans for most lawn and garden equipment.I wish I had the 23 ,but have the 16 and can bog it in thick deep mud conditions.It will spin the tires but not with enough speed to clean them good.that is only those conditions though,it does pretty well in most conditions.As far as the noise in the cab on the bigfoot,I seem to hear more chain noise and floor pan noise than without the top.I agree the trans is noisy,but I have had louder trans noise in older models.The machine I have now is fairly quiet,I always put a can of STP in it when it is new ,I was told this would quiet it down a little.It was told to me by Gene Lintz (Genes Argo) a long time ago.

Just saw where it looks like LIL CRITTER has sold off to SNO-BUS of Pence Wi.Don and Brenda were real nice people,I hope SNO-BUS has the same customer oriented service.Looks like they have a good variety of ATV"s.The tracked one looks like the old Trackster with newer styling.May have to get info and some pricing from them.

I am new to the Lil Critter, having just purchased an 06 model with 23 hp engine. It was bone stock and I am currently "pimping" it. I have added 2 small personal cooling fans, on either side of the dash, rubber fender skirts (JC Whitney), a 1500lb winch and am currently fabricating aluminum diamond plate skid pans. I am in Knoxville, TN if any other nearby owners care.

Thanks Eddie...I was thinking about doing something with the top, but it was more along the lines of what you would see on top of a Kubota lawn tractor...a hard shell that drapes over the bars a few inches. Mainly something that won't rip and protects from the sun and rain.

One issue, that I don't have any ideas on how to solve, is the HIGH HEAT from the exhaust, turning the pass. seat, into a toaster. The fiberglass gets hot enough to burn your hand, if touched. Does anyone have a fix for this? The muffler is almost touching the back of the seat and the foil insulation doesn't do much that I can tell. If it was a single cylinder motor, I can see bending the muffler pipes to move away from the seat, but with 2.....it's a bit more challanging. Any ideas?

I removed the giant canister muffler and ordered a exhaust manifold that pointed to the rear of the machine.Then I clamped a small tube type muffler into the flex pipe before it exits thru the body.Results are less heat,weight reduction,neat sound.I mainly did this to lower the muffler,then cut some height off the rear deck screen,It just clears the Air cleaner housing nowand gives the cargo area a better look. I built a wooden framework to support my AVx4 in the back of my short bed Ram 1500 truck. Works great and doesn't take up alot of room, as the two "runners" hinge in the middle and fold forward, over the top of the platform. I can email pics if anyone is interested.

I have had one problem.. the cable froze up when it was about 15 degrees. It was hard to start wat 9 degrees.

it beats me to death compaired to a 4 wheeler

Used to have that problem too, cable wise, with my old Attex, we used to put Antifreeze in the cable, worked fine, try it.

How much air are you running in the tires, try about 2 psi. Dave

Hi guys, New to this site. I am looking at a 2006 AV-4. I don't have much experience with AATV's. I read through this thread and it seemed that you have all been pretty satisfied with the AV-4. Is this still the case? These posts are two and a half years old.

Those AV-4's still running nice? Any updated info/advice you might be able to offer?
