Recreatives hasn't been sleeping this year, there are some new changes and upgrades on the 2005 Maxs.
-- The 16hp and 18hp Max II models now have the internal muffler and cooling ducts just like the 23hp Kohler model. This is an awesome improvement. No more muffler hanging outside the body under the fender to get caked with mud. The cooling ducts help pull cooler air from outside the Max body instead of hot air from inside.
-- Splined axles now have snap rings to hold the sprockets in place. Set screws are history! This will further improve the lifespan of the drive train.
-- All rims are now black instead of silver. This really looks great with the camo body, and makes all vehicles look tougher.
-- To match the rims and camo body, a black roll bar is now available (finally). It is powder coated and gives the Max II a true camo look. Chrome is still standard and the black is only an extra $50.
-- An older upgrade but the most popular is the new throttle and choke cables. I sell more of these to upgrade older machines than any other part. The choke is sealed and has a metal shaft instead of the old plastic that always broke off. The throttle cable is also sealed on both ends and the new aluminum lever is much tougher and more comfortable.
And we thought the Max just couldn't get any better.... |

Is it worthwhile to pay a little more for a new machine with the upgrades or say a 2002 new machine. I have finally decided to just buy a new Max II. I am planning on getting the 23 hp model.

id have to say that althow ri has made alot of inprovmentd in recent years the most significant is the dealer financing inishitive they are makeing now,
high time most would say,
i know my friend george was verry happy to here about it.
this is the only way we would ever see him in a new machine.
prehaps one day i too will be able to make the plunge,
but only with dealer financing to help me out. |

Dave I posted in another topic about the new dealer financing. It does look like a great program and should help a lot of people get into new Maxs. I hope it works out for you so you can finally agree with Fred and I about the T-20 being 'featherable'. You need a new machine to have a smooth trans!
Bill there is nothing like a new machine, and I'm not saying that because I now sell new Maxs. That is a lesson I learned years ago and also how I learned so much about repairing 6x6s! RI could sell countless more new vehicles if they did a better job of showing the recent improvements. Very simple things like the new throttle lever, choke cable, and no-slip chain adjusters on the Max II can make a world of difference. Call me sometime and I'll give you a complete run down of new vs old. |

I do really like that one handed steering. Of course to achieve true six wheel drive I'd gladly drive with two hands and my teeth. Luckily I can drive a Max with just two hands!

I just got back from the factory in New York about a week ago. This is the first time I've had vehicles with the latest improvements I listed above. Let me tell you, that new internal muffler on the 16hp Max II is awesome. The best improvement in years. I drove it down the driveway to take pictures and couldn't believe how quiet the engine was. So quiet that I could hear other things moving in the vehicle that I couldn't hear on older models. On top of that, the muffler won't get caked in mud like before. Check it out:
You can also see in that picture that all the vent holes have been screened in. The new black rims are powder coated and look great. They are the same k-rims as before.

The vehicles pictured above are 2006 models. RI doens't usually wait for model years to change things. They just do it when it feels right or they run out of the old parts! |

Brandon,
I went a little crazy with the pressure washer and blasted some of the silver paint off 2 of the rims of my '01 Max II. Any ideas on what it might cost me to get them after market powder coated? I like the black! |

Go to a powder shop or get your own powder coat gun. I have my own that I gave $50 for and it works great. I sand or bead blast the object then powder it and bake in an old electric oven. |

This is where I get my powder and I have the basic Chicago Electric gun and it works great. I powder coat just about everything.

Here is a pic of a coated axle, idler shaft, bearing flanges, and sprocket that have been coated. It helps keep things cleaner and makes it easier to work on and see.

Good advise on the powder coating. Bill there was some problems with those painted silver rims. In fact there was a used Max IV at the factory while I was there. I could roll the paint off like sheets of paper with my hand. These new black powder coat rims not only look better but they fix that silver paint flake problem. |
