I have a 1980 agro 6x6, serial # T-4326 / transmission serial # 7109 J. I was wondering when they started putting transmissions with high & low range in them. Mine only seems to have one range, forward neutral & reverse,no high range.Any help would be appriciated. Dave Keeso??????.
p.s. I live in Toronto & would be interested in participating in any rides you planned. Thanks in advance to any that reply.

Norm, I just got off the phone with the guy who used to be a dealer up north at the cottage and who owns two ARGOs himself. He said that their should be a low range and high range gear at this time, but, he wasn't totally sure. I am going to talk to Ron Bast down at ODG by the end of the week and I will try and find out for sure. Another option is go to www.argoatv.com and go to the about us link and their should be a history link there somewhere also. That may help. I am looking in a moment and will post when I find something.

Norm, another option, is if you live close to me, and have the ARGO there also, I could try to stop by this weekend, (friday evening or saturday mid day) and take a look. I don't know you, you don't know me so that may not be the most comfortable idea with you. I am only 18, but have always had some interest in the ARGO. I would be more than happy to take a look. The e-mailing picture thing may be the best bet if you can get me any this week.

I've got a 1980 Argo tb 8x8,it has the oh160 tecumseh, and single speed trans too.I think I read somewhere they made change in '81 or '82 to 2 speed,high-low foreward.Parts manual shows different internal parts used for both models

I had a couple of older Argo's (74 models) and they both had 2-speed trans. The only changes I know of are revised parts or different gear teeth for different ratio transmissions.Unless one of your gears are ground off ,you should have 2-speeds.

I don't know about '74,but I have factory parts manual No.670-09 it covers 1977-1981 T,TB,HT,HTB
1981-1986 KB
K FROM 1983
S FROM 1986
SB FROM 1987
Page 1 & 2 has complete parts break down,so I'm gonna disagree, and mine still has shift sticker on dash, and it is a single speed.Manual lists different part numbers for single, and double speed PTO,and various other parts,so it's gonna be a guess on my part that from 1977-1981 they used a single speed box,as I've talked to a guy with a '77,'79,and I have a 1980 tb 8x8.If you don't believe me check with Argo, and tell them I want my other gear, they short changed me.

From what I have read the first 8x8 was in fact F-N-R, while the 6x6 was H-L-N-R. This was back when they ran Borg Warner transmissions

I take anything I read from Argo with a grain of salt,in publication 673-00 ,1977-1980 service manual, they tell me on page GI-6. I,and other 2 people I mentioned, have 2 speed trans, which I know to be wrong, and they make no mention of single speed trans, but list the parts for it on tr-3 of manual. And Mr. Howards trans with designation J on the end breaks down by part numbers, page TR-4, to be a single speed trans, might be somebody swapped trans out,but I think they used it in more than just 8 wheeler in those years, and decided tecumseh didn't have enough go juice, in 1981,and returned to 2 speed. If manual is right transmission series E,J,JH,JSS,JT,JTH,JTSS WERE ALL SINGLE SPEED,just for the record,if anybody should want to know, and I feel cheated, missed it by one year.

I have 2 older argo machines an 8x8&6x6 both have single speed trans.Tecumseh 160 eng's and are orange in color I think they are around 1980,peculiar to the 6 it has doubleroller chains while the 8 has only singleroller, other than that all parts interchange. My neighbor's machine is off white/tan color tec.160 with 2 range trans. but is considerably newer

Hey Adrian, was curious,What kind of chain adjuster did they use on double row chain on your 6x6?Does it look like the newer chain adjusters,or some variation of the little nylon sprockets on L bracket, they used on single row chain on TB 8x8?

I will take some measurements and get some info on it. Just by looking I know it's really close as all the basics are the same.

Well Rick, it could be done, but you don't want to do it. Would be cheaper to trade up to a Frontier. Greg Orr and family did it to a Bigfoot. If you go to 6x6 home page, Photos/Action Photos/#2, look at bottom of page where Becky posted pics and a story.

Roger that is also my opinion on it. The story you refer to says, "The inside main framework started as a factory Bigfoot frame, but was modified to accept the Argo Avenger Transmission." It doesn't say how, but it does say modified. I will find out how much difference there is just for curiosity. I see no point in spending that much money on a new trans to put in an old machine. You'd want the new clutches also. Plus, the new trans is still not a true locked unit. I believe it is a combination of upgrades on the Frontier and Avenger that make them so awesome, not just the trans.
