I just got my 99 Max II delivered and put it straight in the pond (fist without the plugs). I know their slow but this thing is really really slow. It hardly makes any headway. The V's are facing forward and the height of the tread is 1/2inch. I have 22 inch raw hide III.

Do I need new tires? Does anybody know the height of tread on a new tire?

And if the suggestion is new tires; which size and brand should I get if water speed is most important to me?

Get away from the Rawhides and get some real tires. 22" vampires would be good if you can get some...

I disagree I think Vampires are junk, why do you think they are so good. Most of us have decided the rawhide are good mix of price and performance, there is another long thread about vampires

I don't actually call them rawhides, after running them for only 3 months I came to call them Redasses. I would say go with something larger and more aggressive, but I don't know for sure that the '99 Max will have enough tub clearance. Now as for why in my opinion they (can only speak for the 22's)are JUNK is as follows: They have almost no mudding ability compared to some other tires ( vampires or terra tires,I run 25" Mudbugs)I ride in sloughs that are full of layered leaves and silt with logs. I have driven through and over stuff that the (I'll be nice) rawhides wouldn't and couldn't even begin to go through. With the rawhides at 3psi, I was constantly popping beads loose, with the Mudbugs at 1psi I have yet to pop a bead and the ride is better than the rawhides, and did I mention they are 6 ply that means way fewer punctures- rawhides 1 hole, 1 cut in sidewall and 4 popped beads- Mudbugs 0, 0 and 0. The Mudbugs swim better for me-and I have witnesses to this- than those other tires, and yes I tried every tread direction & mix up that you can think of with almost 0 change and 0 waterspeed. Now don't get me wrong I'm not saying that the Mudbugs are gonna break any swimming records, but I will say that now I can at least MOVE in deep water, whereas with those favorites of yours all I did was stir up the water and went nowhere. I tried low throttle, high, wide screaming open, no throttle, just above idle, high idle, leaning in- every direction- rocking, back and forth all for no gain in waterspeed. If it takes all that then you just as well be on a quad. But I'll tell you the few things that did help the w/s thing-- pushing with a stick-- pulling on limbs that I could reach--winching--or just saying to hell with it and getting out and pushing. I don't know what you ride in-the city park maybe- but if you ever get into the kind of stuff I ride in, you will be needing some tires other than rawhides, unless you like winching.

Now if you want I can get a couple of other fellows to come tell you about Vampires and some other tires.

Redasses pretty good, I have never has trouble with my 21" redasses. Ha Ha . I understand what you are saying but not really agree, someone here sold a almost new set of vampires real cheap about two weeks ago, do a search in case that deal fell through Steve

Thanks, Steve, but I don't need it. You're not the first to get a laugh out of my pet name for the rawhides. I guess it all boils down to personal choice and what works best in each rider's particular terrain. I have a 950 Hustler and let me be clear on this, I have 25" Mudbugs ($79+ tax)on 9" Beadlock rims. I recommended the Vampires because they are available in a 22.5" and I don't think a MaxII has enough tub to axle clearance to run a larger tire, but that may only apply to earlier models. If I had known about the 22" Vampires I would likely have bought them to start with instead of the redasses...er...rawhides. I just went for a 1.5 hour ride and the sloughs are flooded, and I can say once again that I went through stuff that I wouldn't have even thought of trying with the rawhides.

Phillip, I run Mudbugs of the 6 ply 25X12X9 variety, I recommended the Vampires because some of the MaxII's do not have enough tub clearance to run anything bigger than a 22" and the Vampire is the most aggressive 22"(actually 22.5") tire out there. The Rawhides just didn't work for me, but like I said, the stuff I ride in can and usually does go from fairly solid to seemingly bottomless goop in as few as 3 trips through the same spot. Weird, because after it sets a few days it will be back fairly solid for a couple rounds and then I was winching out of what I just drove right over 20 minutes before. I even built a giant fishook so I could just unspool enough line to reach the brush, fling it over and winch out and never get out of the Hustler! But you see, I won't have that trouble with the Mudbugs.

Brad, I love it. I bought for $150 as a basket case- literally. It was full of leaves,had some trash and other mess in it but to my surprise the frame was not too rusty. I now have something in the $4500 range in it.

Hustlers were well built machines and strong, but honestly if you want my objective opinion,this is it: If I had it to do over I think I would go with a MaxIV or maybe a RI Buffalo Truck. Believe it or not my reasons for this are simple. If you know where there is one, go and lie down in front or back of it and look at the bottom of the tub. You will see, under the center axle an area that is the full width of the tub that is actually about an inch(at least)lower than the rest of the tub. This greatly reduces ground clearance and will QUICKLY high center the machine. Max doesn't have this and so I think that in a test situation where both machines were identically equipped: driver, engine, tires, red spring, you know the entire setup, that the Max would out perform the Hustler, hands down every time. Simply because the "open" tub design will not hang you up. I also think that if waterspeed is an issue then the Max would leave the Hustler in that category also. The seats are removable in the Max which can make working on the forward components a lot easier, but the rear axles on either machine are a PITA, unless as I did, you build an elevated engine platform. If you go with a Hustler you have limited parts supplies or have to completely upgrade to newer axles and such. You kinda get the picture. But hey I am not gonna go race anybody, I just want a well put together machine that will allow me to take the kids riding through the mud and swamps, and sloughs, without anyone coming home muddy. I have a couple of quads also, but I didn't want them trashed, like I have seen so many people do, so I figured an amphib was the way to go. If this is the way you feel about your riding then by all means go with a Hustler, I love mine.

Gregg Thanks, My problem with the Max4 is that I think the design is junk, too hard to work on with that engine over the trans. But your thoughts on the body design is eye opening Many thanks.

I do not think the buffalo has its engine over the trans so I will look into it, One problem with the Buffalo is cost, they always seem so high. Brad

I hear what you're sayin' about the engine over the tranny I'm gettin' to deal with that nightmare on a friends MaxIV. Kind of crowded back there. We even mulled over the idea of moving the tranny forward and dropping the motor, so he would have a set-up similar to a Hustler, but it would still be crowded AND the secondary clutch would hit the tub. This could be done but would require MAJOR redesign and layout and the chains would need relocating, which would mean the sprockets would have to be moved also then the... you get the picture.
