For those who want a better understanding of hydraulics, I recommend the following series of books. I would re-title them "Hydraulics for the Layman", because they really simplify and show you what you need to know (and eliminate all the un-necessary theory). Industrial Fluid Power, Volumes 1, 2, and 3. Page 45 of Volume 3 tells you exactly how to figure out what size of motor you need to move any vehicle over all types of terrains, including hills, etc. I got mine mailorder from Womack in Texas (214)357-3871. Surplus Center also sells them (800) 488-3407 for about $20 each.
