I want to build a purposed built ATV/barge that meets my particular needs. Why do I want to build one? I am an engineer. Smart enough to build one; not smart enough to know better.
Requirements:
I have a lake lot that is accessible only by water. I have a boat shed 2 miles from a boat ramp (asphalt all the way with an approximately 30 degree ramp). The lake lot is 5 miles by water from the boat ramp. The shore at the lake lot is mud/sand with a less than 5 degrees of slope. I want to be able to get in my ATV at the boat shed and get to my lake lot in less than an hour (may settle for 1 1/2 hours). I will also need to haul about a 1/2 ton of building supplies on some of the trips. What I need is more of a barge and less of an ATV.
Plans:
Will use two 5 hp gasoline engines to operate two hydraulic pumps; one for the left and one for the right. One 4-way valve with a pressure relief for each side. It will be hard to keep it going straight on land but with a top speed between 5 and 8 mph I hope it is possible. Once in the water a trolling motor will push the 1500 lb barge to the other shore. I would like to use the hydraulics to power the barge to help the trolling motor get me there quicker (1000 rpm prop?). I will then drive up on to the shore or at least beach the monster. The barge will be approximately 4 by 8 by 2. I am planning on making it a 4x4 with the front and rear wheel chain and sprocket-ed together with a slip sprocket on the back. I will use 15 pickup wheels and tires with a 29 diameter and 8 wide (not much traction in mud).
What I need:
Comments and lots of advice.
Wheel motors what can be submerged in water and hubs to adapt from the motor to the wheels. |

It seems to me it would be easier to use an old pontoon boat and add a drive system to it that will let it travel down the road and possibly pull itself up onto the beach. |

JAMES,paved road? Public road ? sounds like what you want to build still has to be registered and insured.I like the pontoon boat idea with a $500 pick-up truck.If you hand paddle your barge you won't have register it ,but that 5 miles will kill you. |

How about hubs to go from a 1.25" tapered shaft or a 1" tapered shaft to a 5 bolt on 4.5 BHC? |

The pontoon boat is a good idea but my problem would be to find one the right size. A big one would be 18+ feet long and weigh 2000 lb. A small one less than 5x 8 could not haul 1000 lb. and I still would have to buy the boat and build the propulsion mechanism.
Right now I have the pickup and the boat. When I haul the boat to the water I cannot leave the pickup and the trailer at the ramp overnight. The road is private and golf carts ATVs are allowed. So my barge needs to be golf cart size. I will have to register it as a boat.
Most of all I want to build something.
Any hydraulic ATV owners out there with part numbers? Anybody use hydro-gear hydraulic wheel motors? |

James,my max 4 has 1'' solid axles with 5 bolt hubs same pattern as a utility trailer or early dodge rims.I'm sure if you contact recreative industries you can buy them.How about a max tub with all the running gear drive,motor,sprockets,chains centered in the middle of your barge below deck level, just lay plywood over opening now you have a flat utility deck you would just have to figure out floating hieght so as not to swamp the max below and add your water propulsion.R.I.is a laid back co. I'm sure they would let you look at parts for ideas ,especially if your project appears to successful. |

James, I forgot to mention,if you go to classified on this site some one is selling a max 4 tub,frame&axles.Try not to re-invent the wheel! |

JAMES. will the small drive wheels self adjust as the tread wears down on the tires? skid steer on black top will scrub tires unless one side turns in reverse. |

The center wheel will have lite springs that disengage while towing (center wheel up). There will be a U shaped bar connecting the center wheels and two seats attached to the bar. When one sets on the seat, his weight will transfer to forcing the center wheel against the drive wheels. Two people will be twice the force. The axial force on each wheel will also have an mechanical advantage due to the contact angle. The center wheel will be an add on after I get the atv working.
I am using two hydraulic drives so both sides can go forward or backward independent of the other. The drives will be in the water with the hoses ran along the sides in the wings. The motors and pumps will be in the wings and not in the tube. The tub will be open except for the removable seats.
I am concern that the front drive wheels may just spin and the back wheels wont skid.
Other features:
The wings on each side will be filled with Styrofoam so that even if the boat is swamped it will not sink.
To tow the atv I will have a built in tongue on the front that will lift the front drive wheels off the ground. The tongue is not shown.
This atv will be registered as a boat and a trailer.
As I work out the details I will update the picture. |

JAMES,in New York you don't have to register or inspect some trailers if the towing vehicle lights are not blocked. Example,welding machines,air compressors,landscape trailers and log splitters.Check your local laws your barge may qualify.My neighbor is a N.Y.S.VECHICLE INSPECTOR and was nice enough to make a copy from the rule book for one of his regular customers who had problems with some law enforcement on this issue to clear things up when consistantly stopped for no tags.Whats the estimated weight of your'' project barge''? |

It is 6+ feet wide so I will have to register it as a trailer. It will weigh 600+ lbs empty. I keep adding weight to lower it's center of gravity. I have both trailer and boat lights. Will most likely add headlights.
Once I got started welding it up I got carried away. It will have 75+ feet of weld. Just 30 feet to go. Boy am I glad I have a wire feed welder. |

Everything is mounted (engines, wheels, pumps, motors, etc). Running all of wiring now. I am so close to starting it up and driving it around the block. Will post pictures soon. |

Went for my first spin. Top speed on level asphalt is 10.2 MPH. Drives great. Ran it up and down some small hills in the park. Next step is to weld up water tight, paint with marine paint and get an outboard motor. Looking for one between 20 and 40 hp used.

Trailer tires and old pickup tires (the ones in the picture). Wish I had at least mudders on the drive wheels. |

Hard for me to believe that I have not worked on it since January. Been building a lake cabin. Plan to finish it this summer along with the cabin. I do have a 30 hp outbourd that I got for it. |
