I started building a 6x6 AATV about 4 years ago & was going pretty good on it until my back injury. I was down for almost 2 years & still haven't got back into it for more than one reason I guess.
So if anyone is interested in taking on a project I have started let me know. I really don't want to sell the whole project but I have my house for sale & I know when I move it will just sit in storage for who knows how long.

I know this isn't the classifieds but I just want to tell a little bit about it.

I have 6, 28x12x12 ITP Black Water Tires & Alum rims that have never seen mud!
1600CC VW Air Cooled Engine
A fully automatic trans rebuilt, with a Peloquin differential installed ( Inquire )which is perfect for a 6x6 project.
The frame which is just tacked together right now.
I started making the hubs for it but haven't finished.
I have two suspension seats I bought from tractor supply.
And other misc engine parts, an extra trans, wheel studs, misc bolts.

Check this link out for the specs & how this Differential Works. Some of you may not believe it but this differential actually has a locker in it and it will allow you to steer.
While the trans is in neutral you could actually spin the wheels in opposite directions with a secondary device like an air motor for a true ZTR. http://www.peloquins.com/pr_euro_car_2003.html
If the link doesn't work for you here just copy & paste it in your address bar.

looks pretty heavy duty, how are you going to steer machine?

Phillip, The frame is one I started from scratch, I had a shop make the rails they are 3/16ths thick. The big photo is of the VW Differential with the Peloquin locker installed.
See the two smaller pics above to see the internals.
You steer by locking one side this will slow or stop one side depending on how hard you brake theoretically.
The locker unit has 2 sun gears & 10 planetary gears.

The unit is different than a limited slip in that it sends power to the side that has the grip instead of the side with slip.

If you go to this link: GO TO THIS LINK

http://www.peloquins.com/pr_euro_car_2003.html
you will have to copy & paste this link in the address bar!!!

and read about the locker it will explain in greater detail about how it works & you will be able to see more pictures.

Dave I live in Indianapolis Indiana.

Well I was planning on using belt drives. This would save 200lbs in weight & would make up for the frame & engine weight as chain is heavy!!

A VW engine & trans combo won't weigh a whole lot more than a 30 horse kohler or Generac with a T-20 skid steer trans anyway. The VW trans weighs about 80 LBS I can pick it up by my self no problem & I'm only 5'8 165lbs.

I built the Frame beefy on purpose so there would be less chance of twist etc. to keep the drive belts aligned which would be critical for long belt life.

The Wheel & Tire combination I'm using is one of the lightest also. Aluminum rims & ITP Mudlites!!

I was planning on having a HDPE body also.
I figured it should weigh under 1000 lbs hopefully in the low 900 range.

I have 28 inch tires but it's capable of having 30's with a 30 inch on center wheel span, 60 inch wheelbase

Howard

The belt drive sounds great, Do you mean like a HD motorcycle or what?

Any ideas on the HDPE body style, I think a truck with a haul box would be the way to go?

Yes Exactly like whats on a Harley.

They last a long time as long as your tension is right, and they're turning true.

I have an idea for a body, but thats a long way off anyway.

A HD drive system sounds good. Do you think it would work and last in a dirty wet environment?

the machines usually are always dirty and oily no matter how hard we try to keep them clean Ryan

I believe it will work. But like anything else it will need regular cleaning & Preventative Maintenance.

The drive system won't be wet all the time it will be enclosed like other AATV's.

There's a possibility oil could get on the belts but you'll just have to keep it clean.

Keeping your machine clean & properly lubed etc. will be the lifeblood of the machine.

Sounds like a great idea to me, get rid of the chains which has caused about 60% of all my atv problems

Sorry I mean, are you thinking about belts to power each tire or chain between the tires, where as belts being used for main drive, as to provide a netural and reverse like a hoot? Ryan
