Did you folks see this? The Mudd Ox. 40hp Kohler engine, equipped with everything but a top, 13+ inches of ground clearance on 25" tires. It WILL counter-rotate too. and about $6k LESS than a comparably equipped Avenger.

Matt is building one fantastic vehicle. It's the same size as the Avenger with better performance thanks to the larger engine and hydrostatic drive - allowing each set of wheels to counter rotate. It is a mid-engine design for better balance. Basically everything is designed the way any amphib rider always knew it should be.

The second photo look more finished, perhaps the first was the first machine! Tires on the second one looks almost useless to me. What;s the deal on the eyebrows over the headlights? I have asked Matt for some more photos

Hi Guys,
Thank You for the intrest in the Mudd-Ox and posting some photos for me. I will be getting some more photos around soon and posting to the site. The tires on the alum. rims are 27x12x12 Bear claws. I have a customer that requested those tires and rims for his machine and allowed me to test run them to see what I think. I have ran them at the Badlands in Attica IN and they ride very good, swim ok and go through the mudd great!!! I thought the rims would get scratched up and banged around but they are holding up well and look like new. I will be make DVDS to send out soon.

Eddie, Matt told me he will build a 6x6 but it could be a little while. He's been really busy perfecting the vehicle design and getting the 8x8 ready to roll. I think he has two and a half years into this project.

I've had the opportunity to watch this vehicle in action and drive it.
It is quite impressive. The counter rotation means turning around in a mud hole. No dragging tires on one side. Instant reverse (even at speed !) More power than you could imagine!!
I've go my wife interested :-)

Thats a real nice looking machine & looks just as capable. I only see one problem with it right off hand. Anyone who rides in the back on the left might get Carbon Monoxide Poisoning from the exhaust right beside their head.

The 40 HP. Kohler runs very clean. I did think about the exhaust fumes for the rear riders. I have done allot of testing and all is good!!!

As far as the fuel tank... Hint: Do you know where the fuel filler is on a 1957 Chevy???

I was hoping you would have fun with my reply. The fuel tank holds 10 Gallons. It is located under the rear seat. The rear seat pad lifts up for access to the filler neck. Good eye noticing no fuel cap... Matt

I noticed you live in Indiana also I live in Indianapolis I would like to see your machine if your ever near Indy with it. I've never been to
Shipshewana but have been close on my job. I started building a machine several years ago but I've been kind of strapped lately so I haven't done much with it for a while.

When are you bringing the 6X6 out?

How much HP are you going to put into that beast?

Is the engine staying mid-unit for the 6X6?

I am FINALLY getting to a point where I may be able to move on an AATV pretty soon! Praise be to God!
This military retirement to civilian job transition has been a not so seamless transaction that I had hoped it to be. Alot of folks say it has been pretty smooth, but a 3 month gap is not what I call seamless.
Anyway, I'll be talking to you soon. Although I may buy the kid's MAX II first.

Sorry to hear about that the other message board is usually hopping,Anyway I think you could still read the forums without being a member.There is probably alot more than I know of but,I know of at least 6 out there being tested,4 to Canada and I think there is 2 in Missouri.I havent heard anything negative yet,if I do I will let you know. I have the web site done. It is www.muddox.net I started production in July 2008. I now have the tops, tracks, snow plow, amphibious trailer, and dually wheel kits done and on customers machines. Coming soon is a full skid plate and rear cargo drop in bed liner. I looked at the Ox website and it doesn't say whether the Kohler engine has EFI carburation. That being said if it is not and you have not done so you should jet it for hi altitude

The Mudd-Ox is not EFI currently. We'll have to see how it performs and go from there. Some Argo's needed to be re-jetted and others were ok. Mostly clutching work was what needed to be done with the pre-efi argos.

Howdy gang, it's the old Mud Rat again. Nope, I haven't croaked yet. I'll bet some of you thought I did.
I'm not plugging for the Hydro Traxx still, I have found an aatv that puts everything else I have owned to shame.
I'm hard to impress and even harder to please when it comes to aatv's.
Recently I drove the Mudd Ox, and was i ever suprised!
It seems that Matt knows a bunch about aatv's. At least he has built a machine with the best of everything.
I was thrilled at the power and how agile it was.
The frame and the whole chassis is extremely well braced with a new design for external braceing on the extended axels.
It finally looks like we have a pleasant choice for hydrostatic drive. I turned doughnuts at any speeds.
I know it will carry a full size moose with no problem of breaking anything.
I intend to have one as soon as I can sell what I now drive.I'm danged tired of breaking down!

Bubba,Bubba,Bubba--Are the heavens falling?? Is it the end of the world? I joined this site five years ago and have enjoyed your stories ever since. But like a Ford man in a Chev. you were always totally committed to the Hydro Trax. I have seen the Mudd Ox in movies and in person and I agree that it is impressive. I did not know about the "External bracing" on the axles. Sounds almost too good to be true. I will wait with anticipation to hear how you like yours when you get it.

Philip, good to hear from you again.It has been a good moose hunting year and the older I get, the more I appreciate a good ride.
That Mudd Ox with those 20 inch rubber tracks and 40 hp engine sure turns me on.
I looked inside and out and couldn't find anything flemsie. Most of my rigs have something I feel like needs beefed up. Not that Mudd Ox!
I don't want to bad mouth what I have been driving, but it isn't tough enough for me.
I require something tough enough to pack big loads and can pull up out of some real steep places with the load. I don't have time for failures, which can mean a long dangerous walk out.Sometimes walking out isn't an option with all of those big ornery brown bears around.
I don't know who Matt had to design the machine, but I will say they sure as heck knew something about AATV's.

Gary, I guess I should have qualified that statement.
I sold my Hydro Traxx a couple of years ago. I've been sick about it ever since.
I wanted something that road softer for my wife who has now 7 fusions in her back. The HT never broke down.
The HT is more spendy, so I'm going with the Mudd Ox, which has more of the features that I'm looking for.I like the 8 wheels, power,speed, and the center engine.I had a good chance to look the Mudd Ox over. We took out the floor boards and I had my hands on everything.I found everything very well engineered. The agility was awesome.
I don't want to bad mouth the light-weight rig that I had.

Bubba ,thanks for the clarification and I'm very sorry to hear about your wife. I am happy however that you had a chance to thoroughly examine a Mud Oxx.I would like to ask you ,in your experienced opinion, how you would compare any possible future maintenance and durability issues such as chains ,bearings ,sprockets, etc. as compared to a Max, Argo, and if the ability to shift into instant reverse at any speed or counter-rotate will have a detrimental effect on these components and shorten their life span .Also are the hydraulic components (pump ,wheel motors ,hoses )at par with what you had in your old Hydrotraxx ?

Gary, I would say that the cleaning and oiling of the chains would be the same as the Max or Argo. It looks like the chains on the Mudd Ox may be a bit larger than the Argo, but not sure.The bearings and sprockets are very sturdy. It has zerks on all of the bearings, which are sealed nicely, and accessable. The axels are heavy and well mounted in the frame. It looks like they would be fairly easy to change out.
The wheel motors are very heavy duty and are tied to the large hydraulic pump with heavy lines. I can't see how a hose could vibrate and break. The pump is connected to the motor with a sturdy belt-clutch assembly, which is also accessable.That is where I like the Mudd Ox over the Hydro Traxx.
The HT had to be turning at a constant 38-3900 rpm to operate. The Mudd Ox, with the belt-clutch connection has positive power to the pump and can be ran at any rpm neccessary to maintain low speeds as well as high speeds.
I like to run the bogs at low speeds when I'm looking for moose. The Mudd Ox can putt along nice and slow at a slow rpm as necessary, not screaming at 3800 rpm. I found the Mudd Ox very responsive and with the hand-grip throttle, I could control the machine under any condition.
My partner runs an Argo Conquest and has for years. He has never broke a chain and he has pulled my big dually truck out of some nasty mud holes and sand dunes.
I doubt if the Mudd Ox chains would ever be a problem with the heavy chains and sprockets, with normal maintenance.
The most impressive thing I noticed was the external brace that run from the first wheel to the back. It was mounted with sealed bearings also. It braces all of the axels together to protect the axels when a rock or stump gets in the way. I seem to find a lot of stumps in the tall grass. This bracing will certainly help when the wheel extenders and tracks are used.
As far as the counter rotation, I promise you that you won't be doing that at high speeds, if you want to still be sitting in the machine.( It's fun on ice though)
Also, the counter-rotation or hydro-static turning is many times easier on the tires and tracks due to the absence of the ground friction of the "skid-steer".
The tracks and tires will last many times longer and the track guards won't be so prone to dig into the sides of the tires.
The pulling back of the sticks will cause the machine to go in reverse. It stops the machine first, before it backs up.Doing that fast certainly isn't something an experienced operator does. I like it because I have had times when I needed to back up quickly as when I'm about to nose into something I don't want to go in to.

Gary, I ran out of space on my last blog, but I did want to say that while I run so much in the peat bogs, I do need to maintain momentum. The Mudd Ox, with the hydro drive will give positive power to all wheels or both tracks. When a side bogs down or I need to turn, it is as easy as adding power to one side, instead of having to brake one track to turn. That helps me to maintain the momentum which helps to keep me from getting stuck. I don't have the option to walk out of some of these bogs, since I can't swim in that muck, I don't need getting stuck.

We now have 4 Mudd-Ox machines running here in Alaska and they are great. No issues with the cold or snow. We have posted a few you tube videos of the machines in action. the machines are very well built and the chains axles, tracks etc are all heavier duty then the competition. Matt has been great and responsive to our input to make this the best amphib on the market. there are a lot of innovative features and the build quality is first rate.Mudd-Ox in alaska

I have heard about a redesign on the Mudd Ox, anyone know about this? Also does anyone have any insight into the long term durability of the old (original style) Mudd Ox? perhaps someone out there has some long hours on their machine.

I am considering buying one, but I do not want another expensive machine, which requires lots of repair/rebuild every 250 hours or so. My current ARGO Conquest while I love it, can not be called anything except a "project on wheels".

I am in the survey business in the mountains of TN and we try to use the machine almost everyday to haul equipment in and out of the mountains, We even have a dedicated GPS unit with 15' demountable tower installed. We put about 15 hours per week, so in a few months I have another 300 hours,

The Argo then needs, chain, bearings, brake pads (twice) tires and belt. I was considering a MAX Buffalo (I know it will break down just as much, but the pickup bed would sure be nice).

The expense of the Mudd Ox may be OK, provided
the machine holds up well.

Sam, I don't mean to hassle the skid-steer folks, but they do cause a lot of stress on the bearings, Sprockets, chains, tires, and tracks.
The hydro-static rigs like the Mudd-Ox have a fluid-smooth turning capability. They put very little stress on all of the running gear due to little ground friction.
They hydro units should last many times longer between running gear failure. Normal maintenance should keep the Mudd-Ox on the job without much problems.
I know I'm going to have one soon and I will be putting it through some heavy loads in steep rugged terrain as well as peat bogs.
I believe you will find the Mudd-Ox tough enough to do your job.

The Mudd Ox is still chain driven from wheel to wheel, so clean and lubed is still needed. It does have high quality axles, not the soft steel that argo uses that allows wear on bearing and seal surfaces. It also has double 60 roller chain on the primary! Compared to double 50 on the conquest, or single 60 on the avenger. Never having to shift gears, the ability to counter rotate each side, and no power loss in turning like the argo differential trans, are a few major differences.

Forgot about the wheels! He mfg's his own, and they are comparable to max k rims. Dimensionally the same as argo bigfoot and avenger wheels, a rawhideIII mounted on Mudd Ox wheels will stay mounted at low or no psi. That means any bigfoot or avenger owner that's tired of running high psi just to keep tires on the rim, now has an upgrade option. I wish Matt's wheels had been out years ago, when I paid over $80 each for cheesy argo 9" wheels. Matt's wheels are much less expensive, and made right! Why a huge organization like ODG sells a product that the tires fall off the rims, that's rediculous.

Sam, Dave is right about new machines.
I'm certainly no expert,but I have been driving them since 1972.
I know I hoop and holler about the Mudd Ox. It is only because I have had so many of the others not live up to the promises. I have been lucky to have called most of the weak spots in the others, not that I want to bad mouth them.
I'm a mechanic amongst other things, and have had input in the bug problems of other units.
I wouldn't rave about the Mudd Ox if I saw something cheap or weak about them.
I have driven one and dug into the chain-gears etc. with an open mind trying to find something I would question. So far they look tough enough to do what I do, which is pack moose in aweful terrain. I wish I could find moose in nice muddy flats, but they usually wind up in thickets with tons of "downed logs" and sink holes big enough to get lost in.
I'm getting too danged old to pack meat much anymore.
I know that the Mudd Ox is new and pretty much untested, and it's always good to see what bugs are in the new machines. So far I think Matt has done his homework with the design and he has shown me that he does know what he is doing.
I'll have one soon and I put it through the bad stuff to see if I can break it.I don't abuse machines, but I do use them to get the job done, what ever the job may be.I will be messing with it several times a week. I'm retired and spend a lot of time out in the bush. I do outdoor video of sportsmen year around, in the roughest ground in Alaska.Crossing ponds, lakes, rivers, swamps,
muskeg,fallen logs,snow fields, and rocks is an everyday occurance.
I wouldn't have considered buying one unless I had driven it and checked it out thorroughly.I suggest you do the same, and not just listen to the old Swamp Rat.
Everyone knows I'm an old Hydro-Traxx owner, and for me to change machines isn't anything taken lightly.

I learned a long time ago that the opinions of even my best friends might not be what I liked.. I form my own opinions. Must be my father's influence. He would ask everyone's opinion, and then do what he had decided before he asked for opinions

My opinion is don't overlook the Ox if shopping for a machine. The wheels excited me more than the vehicle! as I'm not in the market to buy a machine anyway. I travel 1400 miles round trip, three times a year to ride with a great group of guys, Matt is in the group. I don't think of the Ox as a new product, because Matt has been driving a prototype at these rides for several years. And he drove them HARD, I would say abused. He said, "If anything is weak, I want to find it now". He kept postponing production because he wanted the very first one right.

Again, form your own opinions, best done in real life, not armchair wheeling on the internet. That's the problem, if we don't have first hand, real life experience, all we have is talk and speculation.

Just for giggles, I may be a relative new comer to the AATV world. I bought my first machine in the early 70's and have been running swamps ever since.
I spent two years working along the Trans Alaskan Pipeline north of the Yukon River. I was in an Argo most of the time and loved it.
I have owned a half dozen of the other machines since then.
I have been stuck in mud bogs, snow, sink holes, rivers of slush and peat bogs.
I have broken tracks, popped wheels off,burned belts,jammed logs in my tracks,broken wheels, and had about everything on an engine fail.
I have been as wet as a dog,muddy as a hog, mad as hell, and hypothermic enough to be dead.
I can't remember how many miles I've slugged through the mud to get help. I can't count the blisters, blood, snot and tears from having all of that fun. It has been said that I have spent more time in an outhouse than some have spent in the bogs.Don't know if that one is true or not. Sounds good though.
I don't just go on rides a few times a year.
At my age, I don't have all of that many sunrises left, so I'm out there every week, and sometimes several times a week.
When I give my "opinion" about a machine, it comes from a lot of time in the outback, in "real life". I don't form my opinions from "armchair wheeling".
Having said all of that BS, when I find a machine that the design and engineering sets it apart from the rest, you can bet that I'll be blowing my horn about it.
My little wife said she would kill me if I buy that Mudd Ox!Dang it, I do believe it would be worth it!I hear that there are mud bogs in Heaven? Just my "opinion" of course.

Well it's been quite a while since I've posted on here. I Just looked up Soldotna, Alaska. My dad and stepmom are planning a trip to Alaska this summer to see my stepsister who is stationed in Fairbanks I thought it might be a good opportunity to meet you George, but it looks like it's over 500 miles to your place from Fairbanks. I was hoping I would get to go but don't know yet. I like that Mudd Ox pretty good but I have an unfinished project in my garage.

I visited the Argo booth at the Toronto Sportsman's Show today. Biggest news was they had the new 25 inch Argo tire for the Avenger there on display. It sure looked wider,12 inches, than the same style Frontier tire, It also looked a full inch bigger in diameter,but I don,t know how much air pressure was in either one. Also they have stopped putting the "Jim Shockey" clean out door on the air intake screen. They had an 8 wheel Frontier and an Avenger with a plow and a couple with roofs and a blue 6 wheel Frontier . Maybe more that I don't remember. The Avengers being built from now on will have the new tires as seen being water tested by AAA Argo on You- tube. I am dying to try a machine with them on in the water myself .

Right now I'm facing the toughest trail of my life.
I flunked my cat scan yesterday. It looks like some sort of rare colon cancer. The right kidney is also a mess.
I will be facing the surgeons real soon.
There's a lot of swamps out there with no tracks in them.I have no intention on giving in to this thing. Keep me on your prayer list.

Gang, thanks for all of your support and prayers. I'll be getting the blade on Tuesday. I should weigh a bunch less!
I'll be out of commision for a few days, then back at it. I can do OK with one kidney, and a foot of colon gone. I just hope they don't shorten anything else. I couldn't handle that!!
The worst thing will be drinking that gallon of "flush stuff". I may lose up to 50 pounds if they get it all. I'm sure some would say I would lose at least a hundred pounds. It may very well be true.
I'll keep you all posted as soon as get back at the puter.

Dave, yeah, it will called "The Misadventures of Bubba".
It will be about all of the bad-strange things that have happened to me over the last 66 years.
Some of the stories will be from my web Blog at shadowmountainoutdoors.com.A lot of the stories will be about "swamping" in the bush.One will be about sitting up in a tree bleeding all night from a bad shot with an arrow.(Tok River Grizzly)
Anyhoo, getting a few butterflies about the knife on Tuesday. I'm at peace about it, but it bothers me to miss out on the last of ice fishing.
Danged volcano is making everything nasty. I'm not used to brown-lavender colored snow.
By the way, did you read my first book?

Some one asked about a redesign of the Mudd-Ox, i think evolution might be a better term as Matt is always looking for ways to improve the machine and is responsive to input. the chain tensioner system is new, frame bracing, new accessories since we received our first machines to the ones coming now. search alaska mudd-ox on youtube for many videos of the machines here in alaska. We have been abusing them here with great results. check one out if you have a chance

I know a guy who has a mudox, he is real unhappy with it, he said chain adjusters are junk and he had a bad clutch and you have to remove engine to get clutch off ad it hits something when trying to remove it, he has had so may problems with it that he is trying to get the dealer to buy it back.

Phillip You do not have to convince me of anything or bet me, Like I told you, that machine is my friends.

I am trying to get him to post his problems here, I do know his is unset and UNHAPPY with Matt, his dealer is Argo Direct in IL and his dealer is 500 miles away, so every repair is a trip.

I not think the machine is as good as your "dozen completely satisfied Mudd-Ox owners" to be honest I do not believe it.

Well gang it's me again. The kidney weighted in at 3-4 pounds. Must have been a world record. I just got out of the hos-house and found one who is having a problem with a chain tightener.
Well there is always some one who will have a problem, but it takes only about a minutes to replace the tentioner.I intend to have a few of those on hand. If that's the only problem I have it will thrill the heck out of me.
My neighbor has a new caddy and it needs a little maintenance from time to time. I can say for sure that a pain free machine will never exist. All of you old Swampers know if you run swamps, things will fail sooner or later.Small things are always the least of my my worries.
I can install a tentioner with one eye tied behind my back.:-)

Folks, it's hard to fail when you have this much support. Words of incouragement are never just words. They come from a man's guts and a very "human" part that usually doesn't show.
The good part is they are connected.
Some time it's just a pat on the back when words are hard to say. Sometimes it's a hug when words are hard to say.Sometimes it's a nod or a glance.The main thing it is always felt in a place that's usually scared and trying to be strong for everyone else.
Whatever the case may be, not one of those words or gestures goes unfelt.
I have never faced what I had to face lately, but I did draw great strenght from all of those words of encouragement. Some of you I had never been aquainted with and probably will never meet.None of that makes any difference either.
The thing is we are a "Brotherhood" of AATV'ers.
We hear a different drum beat and look at life and "wild places" differently than most folks.
Maybe we walk just a bit closer to the one who created all of the wild places, with a deeper appreciation of all creation.
As for me, my favorite times come from being out on a ridge, overlooking a beautiful lake, listening to the cry of the loons.
"Out there" is where I find out not only who I am but "who's I am".
"Out there", is where I long to be when things are falling down around my ears. "Out there" is where I find peace in a world where not much peace exists.
Not many will uderstand what I'm trying to write, but I know the kindred spirit of the "Brotherhood", will know exactly what I'm saying!

Yeah, I suppose the "Brotherhood of AATV'ers is a bit over-kill.
I just find more fellowship amongst the swamp rats, than those who pecks those little white balls across the nice green grass. I guess we are a bit clickish, but I would rather hang with those who don't mind getting a little mud on their feet as compared to those little "white ball peckers".:-)
As long as they don't peck those little white things into my mud hole, I won't drive on their grass.Maybe?

Phillip, thanks for the vote of confidence. I guess I'm going to have to get up off of my hind-end and get buzy.
Got one more(I hope), surgery on Tuesday, then I'll be dealing with it.
I got a lot of video to shoot of bear hunters and fishermen coming up. Then in June I'll be running the set-nets in cook inlet, off of the beach. We'll be catching a couple of hundred salmon for friends and family. That usually takes 4-5 days. By the way I have a DVD of last years fishing adventures. It covers several lakes,clam digging, and set-netting for salmon.
I usually sell those for $10+ S&H. I'll eat the S&H if anyone wants a DVD.I also have some DVD's of several years of moose camp.

Howdy again , I'm finally back on my feet. I should be getting my Ox in the first week of July. I intend on putting it in Black Water swamp. No one goes in there. It is a lake with 2 feet of peat moss and mud. No one knows actually how deep it is. I will be going into the middle and doing dept checks, which means I will have to stop.We'll see just how good that old Ox is. I'll have my partner with his argo shooting video and pulling me out if I get caught in that mess. I'll be posting all of my video and a log that I'll keep on everything I find out about the diesel. I hear it has screaming power and is very good in fuel consumption.

If all goes as planned I should have my Mudd-Ox delivered to me in November of 2010. I have eight 26x12x12 ,Interco, ASX tires , that are mounted on new , black, bead lock rims from Recreatives. These tires perform outstanding in the mud and will swim about 2 mph in the water.

Hey Mudd Rats,
I've had a couple of months to put my new Turbo diesel Mudd Ox through a bunch of bad stuff.
The power is unbelieveable. The agility is fast and very responsive.
I crossed mud bogs with the 20 inch tracks and left so little of a trail that I had to use the track-back on my GPS in order to get back.
I conquered Black Water Swamp. I even stopped in the middle and was able to pull right on through with no problems. It was a lake of floating peat moss mixed with mud, with places where it was many feet deep of water. I didn't think any AATV could go through it, but I was wrong.
In a month of swamp running in areas where no one had ever been, I never came close to getting stuck.There where some scary drop offs into bottomless places where I could tell I was floating in a sea of weeds and water.
Matt has built a tough machine that I haven't been close to breaking.
