I have looked at both the Argo Big Foot and the Max IV, and have decided the Max IV is what I want. The 8x8 are just too long.
My question is which Max IV? Is the higher HP worth it, or is 23 HP enough. The Argo only has 18 HP and is heavier. The 27 HP Max is out of my price range.
I like the 18 HP for the recoil start, but think the extra HP of either Kohler engine, 23 or 25 HP, might be worht it. Are there any differences between the two besides HP?
Any help would be appreciated. |

So far my 18 HP has enough power to go through just about anything, but I would like some more acceleration than what it has. Also, the Briggs is a little bit loud for having a conversation with the back seat passengers. I belive the Kohler engines are quieter than the Briggs and have a little more power. I think the 23HP Kohler would be the better choice if you have one. I bought mine used (1999) and I couldn't be happier, but if I were to shell out the big bucks, it would be a 25 Kohler. |

There is one big difference between the engine choices that I think RI should promote. The engine drive clutch on the 25/27hp engines is much larger and allows for a higher top speed. In my experience the overall performance is also improved with this clutch. The 23hp engine works great and has plenty of power, but it does use the smaller clutch. Our beloved 25hp 900T is getting the axe... as soon as RI runs out of those engines (about five left). I hate to see it go but the new 950T 27hp is all that and more. If you plan to get the 25hp engine you'll need to order quick.
The Max IV needs all the power it can get. It turns 26" tires and carries up to four people. It's true the 18hp is 'enough' power but it is not as much fun to drive. It bogs down under load and throttle response is no where near the Kohler or Kawasaki. The Briggs has an off the line hesitation and I experience more choking out on hills with that motor. I've had the 27hp Kaw on some extremely steep hills, even going up backwards (don't ask) and it never missed a beat. Your machine will go more places when you have a huge amount of power to turn those tires. Some people make the mistake of holding the throttle wide open on a 25hp engine in soft terrain. You'll need to conserve throttle in some loose places where the big motors will spin the vehicle stuck before it can move. |

Don't get the BS motor. From my experience and my dad's experience, they're garbage. Maybe these Vanguards are better, I dunno, but the small ones we've worked on suck.
Kawasaki would be your best bet but the Kohler's good too. |

All Max IV's have a quieter exhaust system as of spring of 1999. This can be determined by the round exhaust "can" rather than a square or rectangle shaped one. Liflod, I notice in your picture that you have the old "loud" exhaust. Anyway, in my experience, the hp and torque difference between a 18 briggs and 23 kohler is a lot, but the kohler and kawasaki are a bit louder due to the increased engine size and displacement. What goes in must come out. |
