I'm buying an Argo (Conquest 8 or 6 wheel or Avenger) or Max IV soon and plan to use it for Duck hunting. My trips usally involve me (170 #s), my Lab (90 #s) and one friend.
Which is more stable in the water: Argo or Max.
Is it safe to stand up in either one without risking tipping it over?
I need to be able to pull my dog out of the water after a retrieve. Can you lean over the side of one without tipping it over?
By the way, I'm really leaning towards the Max IV because it's almost 1/2 the price as an Avenger.

I just took an Argo into the water with four people. Plenty stable enough. |

I have an older Argo Vanguard 2, which is not close to top of the line or the best displacement. I take it out in the water with two dogs. I'm 300 lbs and I have a 100 lb Rot/ Shepard mix that rides in the back while my lab around 60 pounds swims. After he gets tired he wants in so I just reach out with one arm and lift him in by the scruff of the neck. It is stable enough to do that but I do sometime get water in when the rubber guard around the body dips into the water then the water leaks in between the body halves. My argo just about has the front tires underwater so it is slow in the water and has a hard time climbing up a bank that is soft. I just ordered a Max IV 950T and became a Max dealer. I test drove a Max IV and at first it felt less stable in the water but that might have been because I had myself and a 230 pound person sitting in the backseat and it had a roll cage. And I don't know what the bottom looked like uder te water so I might have hit a drop off on one side first. After a second to shift the weight it settled down and went through the water much quicker than the Argo I own. The max had the 26 inch tires, which I believe is huge advantage. To steer the Argo in the water I just lean, the max didn't want to lean as much so I used the sticks to turn and it turned in a smaller circle than the vanguard 2. I have ridden in an Argo Bigfoot with a guy who was 6'7" and probably 350lb plus. I didn't ask his weight but when he shook my had his hand engulfed mine and I have large hand. I wear a size 10 latex sterile surgical gloves and XL if that mans anything. I can stand in the Argo and have tried jumping in the back to shift the weight around to try and climb up the bank. Now when the Lab decides he is ready to swim again and I'm not paying attention or looking the oterh way it can startle me, especially when the dog in the back has to look out the same side to see what is going on.
So to wrap it up I expect the Argo 8 wheelers are very stable, especially the Avenger. Then I would say the big foot as far as Argo goes. I have not been in a Max 2 so I can't comment and didn't get enough seat time in the Max IV but it did seem stable. The Max IV had an 18 horse B&S so I expect it might be more stable than the 27 hp kawasaki.
So what this comes down to is just an opinion and to really know try and test drive some different machines and see what feels good to you.
My Argo is least stable when trying to exit the water and one side get traction and the other ide doesn't and it tries to do a 180 back into the water, man that ticks me off, and sometimes I've had water pour in over the back when that happens. |

ARGO CONQUEST. I take my Argo out into Pyramid Lake north of Reno. Things I have learned. Do NOT put up the windshield. It acts like a big sail and if the wind comes up, you are sailing down wind. Watch out for waves from large and/or fast boats going by. Other than that, I get along fine with a 6 hp out board on the back and a bilge pump. I highly recommend the pump, just in case you got some leaks. |
