I am looking for a used Argo and would like advice from owners on the following features:
Hydraulic vs. mechanical braking (Vanguard II vs. Vanguard)
Vanguard engine vs. others in Argos
Years in which important new features were added (so I don't end up buying a really functionally obsolete one)
Problem areas to look for in a used machine
Approximate price range of used machines
Are tires fine on snow, or are tracks required(up to 18", usually fairly wet, also groomed trails)
Can you mount a winch on ANY Argo easily?
Ditto with hitch?
How do you plow snow with an Argo?
I'm looking for a machine that will haul 2 adults and 2 children on logging roads and private woodlands, will drag some logs out of the woods, will haul water and feed, will haul deer out of the woods, and can get us into and out of the property when the roads are snowed in. I'm not interested in high speeds, hill jumping or climbing, mud bogging (on purpose) or extended water use. I'm looking for a machine as easy to maintain and service as a go-kart, log splitter, garden tractor, etc.
My family had a Scrambler when I was young and it was a lot of fun, but a lot of work.

Vikki P I have an old Argo so I will try to answer some of your questions. The others that I can't answer I'm sure other Argo owners will help with.

Brakes: I have mechanical, and have had no problems with them. I have never had juice brakes so I can't speak on them.

Vanguard engines are a good motor. I have a Tecumseh, it sucks, WAY underpowered and lots of problems.

I don't know what year they added the double chain but to me it is not important. I know others will disagree. I had a 1100 Suzuki with about 120 HP on tap and never broke a #50 single chain. I did my share of 6k starts!!!

Problem areas. Just look at all the chain, sprockets and bearings real well, and make sure the engine rus well. Other than that there is not much else too these things.

Price range. Look under this sites used machines.

Snow and tracks. Can't speak to either, don't have any experiance with either.

The winch and hitch deal can be put on any Argo that I know of. I even retro'ed my old Argo with a reciever type hitch.

You plow by bolting a plow on the front of your Argo and you lift the plow with your winch.

The Argo will serve you very well for the jobs you have in mind for it. I'm sure you will enjoy it for work and play.

Hydralic Brakes are definatly a must in my opinion. They are even more critical if you are running tracks on the machine. The only engine difference is in the vanguard- 16 hp and the vanguard 2 has a 16 -- The bigfoot, response have 18 hp and the conquest has 20 hp. The 6x6 conquest has 20 hp also I think but I'll double check.

I think all ARGOs can support a winch and the hitch shouldn't be too much of a problem. (Towing capabilities are better than what the literature says.

Maintanence can get pricy if you buy a old machine that wasn't kept up but overall, parts are not hard to get, and their are a lot of dealers to help if you need it (regardless of what others on the board think- their are dealers around and route6x6 is also a big help)

You want a machine that has been well maintained, solid, no body damage, running engine, and not a rediculous amount of hours on the thing.

Good luck and enjoy

the best design changes for a argo, would be to flatten them all like pancakes and throw them into the garabage.

roadwolf, i was just kidding with my above comment. I feel exactly the same way- except my opinion stems from looking at a MAX- I don't like the look of them at all and that is why I hate the vehicle even though they may be better than an ARGO, but thats also my prejudice. No offence anyone-max are ugly and as for comparison of ability, i can't speak for it.

path puppy,i to am offended by your statement.i happen to like the argo design.but i also am open to improvement.and i can't see where flattening them would make a good machine, better.perhaps you should sharpen your crayon and go back to your BIG CHIEF note pad and try to redesign your argo again.no offense.

Woah, things got sturred up after my first comment I think.

Funny how people jump at the slightest comment. Roadwolf, i was only joking around when I made my comment about being offended. Its all the same to me and I wasn't offended at all. I actually laughed. Do you live in mississauga? Im near you in Etobicoke.

sorry it took me so long to get back to you roadie.....i was giving you credit for the BIG CHIEF. ba ha.i think argo could make a few changes,as in a little more leg room for the driver and passenger.that is just for starters.but eeeeven you must admit that they have the best looking body style, or hydro-traxx wouldn't be using it.or at least something simular to it.
david, hey it's all in good fun.i've been cooped up in my house for the last 6 months with no sixwheeler of anykind and i needed to blow off alittle steam.no harm, no foul.
