Thanks, Roger. Your thumper sounds pretty evil, itself. I keep replaying the Grand Lake video between time 1:00 and 1:08. Awesome! It almost sounds like you're just running straight pipes on it. What engine are you running?

I'm currently building a 4-stroke Attex, using a Kohler 26-horse EFI. Lotz of guts for the little 450-pound Attex. I hope it can squirt around like that giant Conquest!

It ought to! I thought a maxII was light.. I'd need coffee before I drove one of those hot, short, light attexes.

Mines a 18hp B&S vanguard. Cam, compression, rods, valve train parts.. it didn't like the stock restrictive exhaust so built a header/collector. Somehow forgot about a muffler on this first attempt It's loud, but the camcorder or dvd recorder I used must have some auto level sound control that makes it louder on tape when it should be more distant.

Was really nice to see the Attex site, videos & people. I knew very little about them.

Here's another Haspin Acres, Fall '04 sample video. I should mention these are John Schwab's (jsschwab@localnet.com) film's and they are available on DVD. So is the 'Tory's Roll' linked further up this thread.

Oh, man do I need to get out on the trails more.

I will try my hardest to get my butt in gear and get a (long) trail machine finished so I can attend these events. I don't know how any of the two strokes would have performed on a couple of those hill-climbs, but I'm sure I'd succumb to some serious pucker-factor...

A lot of the pictures and videos on the Attex Site are from Copper Ridge, which both Tory and John attend each year. It's not as big as Haspin, but it's a lot of fun nonetheless.

Chuck I went out on the ice too. It was to thin to walk on but I could drive on it. For the guys up North this is no big deal. For us in Southern Illinois, it as been around 17 years since we have had the lakes freeze. My 60 pound dog could not walk on the ice without rbreaking through.

I went out to get some more video yesterday and I guess the ice got weakend by me playing on it saturday, that and the warmer temps yesterday and After a couple of passes the Argo broke thru, and since I had my plow mounts on it wouldn't climb back on. So we winched it back to the bank.

I took on a little water, when it broke thru and when I was rocking it trying to get back on the ice. Time to install a bilge pump.

Guess my warning will come too late..well here it is.

You guys be careful on the ice, don't let it break and the vehicle go in on it's side!

Chuck, I mounted a bilge pump in a chain well behind a front axle, gets all but about a pint out. Will get a pic for you soon.

I agree Roger I decided to get off of it since it was so thin. I imagined just what you said a tip to the side or only a partial break through allowing the Max to fill with water. It was flexing and pushing an ice wave in front of the Max so it was ready to go.

a year or two ago tim okeefe went threw the ice on one side first!
turnd into a fiasco when the fire department showed up, some skaters had pulled him from the bigfoot already but the fire department took him home and played with there rescue equipment anyway.
and since knowone knew anything about how to drive it they left it in the pond over night.
i went down the next morning and we went out and bought a builge pump wich we tossed in from the edge of the hole in the ice hooked to jumper cables,
the local papers said it had sank to the bottom but i had found it floating, abit swamped but floating.
after the water it had taken on was pumped out i climbed in started it up and drove it out!
tim sent me the news papers to scan and post but i dont have a scanner.

Here are a couple videos of the Attex bunch at the ATV Rodeo in Phillipsburg, PA 2006. We'd like to get a bunch more people to show up. These are just a couple old junk Superchiefs playing around...

Junk #1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5DkelNp7yo

Junk #2
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1106236893981991541&q=attex

We're trying to get an amphib-only event going, as there are about 80 quads there too. It makes for a long day waiting for 6 or 8 different classes. As you can see from the two vids, this place is 4-stroke friendly too!

I'd like to post videos of a few of others at the event too. There may be more to come...

Nice to see the higher quality attex video than the older stuff! Well the old stuff was at least vhs anyway but we didn't have broadband to view it with.

"These are just a couple old junk Superchiefs playing around..."

I really don't think those are junk. I think they'd blow away any new amphib. I'm sure a bunch of us would love to have one of those.

Sorry, I should have qualified that post. The "old junk" machines are my Superchief and Don Kinyons (aka "The McKay") racer. My machine is a recent 2005 build, but Don's machine has much more heritage. The machine was raced in the D/stock class in NATVA by the McKay brothers in the later part of the '70s. It and the Gerber family's racer (another D/stock Superchief) dominated a lot of races with their featherweight chassis and high horespower oriented drivelines. Don can speak to the history of his own machine more appropriately. It's running a stock, but "very closely looked at" 484 cc Xenoah/Chaparral with (about) 50 hp and an ATV 6000 transmission, a stock Attex dry-disc brake type transmission. It's friggen' scary, and not for the timid.

My lowly Superchief runs a 2Si(Cuyuna/JLO) ULII-02 engine (430cc) out of an ultralight aircraft (yeah, I like saying that). It's not quite as fast, but equally fun. Neither of them are truely junk; it was a weak attempt at sarcasm.

I love watching them two strokes fly through the stuff, instead of watching the 4 strokes try to putt through it. My old 74 Argo had a 399cc Kohler originally, now it has a 71 Rotax 635cc in it, and it's scary sometimes on how fast it is, and how much power is there. Thanks for the videos! I wonder if the newer machines could handle a 40 or 50hp snowmobile engine?

I think newer machines would be able to handle the power even better, with the advancements in splined axles, bearings and sprockets compared to earlier designs. The only questionable part (I think) would be the transmissions ability to handle the power, and both the Argo and T-20 have both proven their ability to handle both the hp and RPMs. The McKay racer uses #40 (single) drive chain from the transmission to the center axle/jackshaft and to the rear axle, and it holds up well as long as the driver doesn't flog it too badly...

Frontier Footage anyone? John Schwab has a new DVD, filmed at The Badlands. WOW!! This is an outstanding video. Just under 2 hours with Jon Hoath's new Frontier throughout the movie. Water, mud, flooded timber, sand and gravel dunes, flooded fast running streams, big hills.

Also along for the ride, 2 max II's, a bigfoot, conquest, and response. Everyone pushed the flight envelope and sometimes beyond! Here are some screen shots. If you want to contact John Schwab and need his address, click on my user name and e mail me for it.

That is John Schwab's e mail address. His personal computer is on the blink, although I think he reads incoming from work but can't respond.. something odd like that. Anyway, he has unlimited long distance, so put your phone # in the e mail and expect a return e mail or phone call. If he doesn't, e mail me with your info and I'll pass it on when we talk.

Thanks Roger, I am glad you liked the video. Our recent trip to the Badlands was among the best ever. Five inches or rain in the first 48 hours we were there, and the best riding group a person could ask for. This is not the forum for selling things so I will just say that I can be contacted at jsschwab@localnet.com
This was my second trip to the Badlands, the first time I was new to this stuff, running a 14hp MaxII and riding with strangers. Now I have 18hp, have learned how to ride with the rubber side down (most of the time anyhow)and our group is out to have a great time, no arguments about whose machine is better (we all know mine is).

Hi John!
Long time since I've seen you on the discussion board. I have since found out why from reading Rogers info about your computer being on the blink. That Badlands ride sounded awsome. Where is that? Looking forward to riding season again. Let me know when the group goes again I'll try to come along. Thanks

Hi Chuck, how's the mother to be?

The picture.. Jon Hoath climed over a long narrow boulder, he tetered on top, stood up and leaned forward to see what was below him, and the argo tipped forward. He stepped out/bailed out/was thrown out and landed gracefully in the creek. We busted a gut, it was hilarious.

RJ- The videos of the Haspin Acres weekends, especially the winter rides tend to be pretty extreme stuff. The Humphrey NY Jamborees and the Ledges rides are large group outings and tamer. Our Ribits Rider Club rides have lots of kid and family stuff. I guess it depends on what you want to see.One of by favorites is a club ride in Pa. when Jim had about eight or ten little kids in his Vanguard II and drove around in a swamp for a half-hour or so while they screamed, hooted and hollered. I also like the one where Al rolled his MaxII and he did the screaming and hollering by himself(we did the laughing).

Here is 10 minutes of video of the Badlands ride. Not as sharp and clear as the DVD but hey, google and youtube host the big files for free. Enjoy! And give John Schwab a pat on the back for spending valuable riding time documenting our sport for the sake of posterity.

Hey Roger, I just want to thank you for posting that vid, excellent. I've never been to a ride so it gave me an idea of the fun one can have. And thanks to John S. who is the author.

Great Balls of Fire!!! I mean MUD! I just got home from a trip last night. I have watched the BADLANDS 2007 video twice since I got home. It's over 2 hours long. MR. schwab drives a Max ii all over with the rear wheel GONE.even in the water! An 8 wheeler-mid engine-hydraulic-wheels going both directions at the same time. I was not immediately taken by the Frontier, but I have now seen it go up hills,in mud where it should not have been able to go. And it is FAST in the water. Roger Smith's "big motor, no muffler, special tired 8 wheeler" is just unbelievable, again and again. A backward roll into water with a Max. Roger up a long hill that even John Hout wouldn't try. But he'd ride up standing in rogers machine. This is the absolute best advertising for our sport. If you see it, show it to your friends. Especially the part where the 4 wheeler sinks! W. Philip Cox

I have a "muffler" now, Philip! John Schwab told me, as we were leaving Haspin in January, to get a muffler before I showed up again, in so many words. it was freakin' ear piercing loud. Glad you liked the film, it's a good one.

Making these videos is a ton of work and expense. It only becomes worthwhile when I hear about folks enjoying them, thanks Phillip. Of the 24 titles currently available, this one has been in the top three in entertainment value. I am just finishing up #25. In case you were wondering how I ended up on five wheels: I bashed a submerged rock hard enough to bend the axle and break the retaining collar. I took off the wheel, threw it in back, disconnected the chain and drove the rest of the day like that!Quite a challenge to say the least.Needless to say as I replace my axles I have been upgrading them to the Argo-style with retaining bolts in the end!!

Hey John, I received my 4 videos earlier this week and it's all that I've been watching since!! As I was expecting, it confirmed my purchase of a Frontier for this spring. I'll probably order it in a week or two. Your videos really show what these machine can do. Keep the camerea rolling!!!

I like the part where Roger casually smokes as he takes his rig up the steep hill that no one else seems to go up. (just from the clip)

Mike- Roger is the "King of smooth" as he makes tough terrain look easy. Once in a while he even knocks the ash off of his cigar.
Steve-You've got enough hours of AATV footage to wear out a Lazy-boy. The designers at Argo seem to have produced a winner in the Frontier. Enjoy your videos!Occasionally I make it in front of the camera. I have a green Max II with camo top, usually doing something foolish.

John Schwab, Funny that you mention your max and it's roof but you didn,t mention the wild (in my opinion) world war II german helmet that you wore in the Badlands 2007 movie. Is that for real? Thanks for a great movie,it's the best $18 that I ever spent. W. Philip Cox

The helmet is funny..

We don't see as much of John in the movies as he's usually the guy with the camera. And seems like most of the footage around here has been argo. So I dug up 7 minutes from the Haspin Fall 2004 movie with mainly John Schwab and Jon Hoath in Max II's. Bob and Julie Ells are in a couple shots.

Philip- The brief story behind the helmet, I picked it up at a pawn shop in Fla.thinking it would be a good gag gift for someone in my mc riding group. However it is very light and comfortable, perfect for 6x6 use, no neck strain.Quite a fashion statement also(providing you are in 1938 Berlin)It wasn't until I watched the footage that I realized that with the black rainsuit, I thought it looked more like Darth Vader!

I showed the Badlands 2007 video to our local Argo dealer and his best friend after work today. They were amazed at what John Hout could do with the Frontier. They asked me to find out what modifications Roger Smith made to his engine. I know that Roger posted that recently but I can't find it. Can anybody tell me where to look? Thanks W. Philip Cox

You might have to search by my user name, through all my long winded posts

Basically it's just old school 60's, 70's performance engine technology and fuel. There's a relativly small community of different groups who use the Briggs and other small engines in various racing categories. If they want more info they can e mail me.

Saw a video camera on the Today show that caught my attention. Googled it and found it for a $100. This site is one of many.

http://www.weatherconnection.com/product.asp?itmky=882426&s=froogle

A small, 2 AA battery powered cam that uses SD memory cards. Will record in 640x480 and lower. Comes with a 32 meg card but thats less than a minutes worth of 640 video. Will take a 2 gig SD card supposed to be good for about an hour @ 640 res. Found the 2 gig card for around $15-20

Reviewer tosses cam out 2nd story window into a swimming pool.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9q3e01OGEl8&NR=1

I found dozens of videos people made with this thing. It comes with straps and mounts.. handle bars, helmet strap, velcro. Also it's waterproof to 10ft depth! Saw video in swimming pools, kayakers. Strapped onto a model rocket, cars, cycles, hang gliders, parachutists, atvs.

It doesn't have image stabilization, of course for a $100 don't expect it to. So rigid mounted to our amphibs would be a bouncy video. The audio is very faint, not much there, guess because it's waterproof. One guy said he wouldn't make a whole movie on it but use action cuts from it interlaced into a conventional video. I've got software to increase audio level so that might help. Have to see whether Schwab or I get one first who's going to be the guinea pig. Looks like the perfect whitewater camcorder. If we get mud on it just rinse it in the creek! And at only a $100, we'd take risks we wouldn't with a regular camcorder. One guy dove off a cliff into a lake with the thing in his hand.

Thanks for thinking about me Roger. People who know me also know that I like to video all my fun activities, be it in a raft, boat, kayak ,m/c or others that tick off the little lady. I have been looking into these cameras myself, but video sales are pretty slow. Makes it hard to get enthusiastic about making new and better videos. We will see what happens. I have never had good results with any form of "in motion" footage. It usually makes the viewer ill to watch.

I think without good motion compensation a camera for 6x6's isn't going to do the job. With this little camera I might get a few good moments out of an hours run time, just turn it on and see what it catches. One guy mounted it on his front truck axle for an unusual shot. It seems to work best on slow action, like hang gliding and whitewater boats, even a helmet that's held steady and not glancing all over the place. The speed quality of the memory card seems to make a difference, how well it can record and play back. I found a site about action cams, they had a thread about this cam with a 123 posts. Was nodding off trying to get through them last night.

A unique self contained no cords waterproof impact resistant $100 + memory cards.

Video compression makes image not as good as normal vid cams but better than vhs. Sound very poor. One user figured out why, the mic has a solid cover and a gasket. He took that off and did a small modification and then had fairly decent sound, but of course lost the waterproof capability.

I wonder how good the motion compensation is on a $200 vid cam. I read that it's optical compensation.

How small of camera are you wanting Roger? Have you considered a housed camera?

I don't know what I want, Jerry

I don't need or want anything but this one caught my eye. That it's self contained, camera, battery, data storage in a small package. I ordered one, $80 shipped so guess I am the guinea pig. When John and I film our rides we have to stop and get cam out/film/put cam up. So I'll try it as a helmet cam, just leave it on and ride. Maybe it'll catch something we would've missed. Or strap it on the front of a max and fly into a mud hole.. something we don't do with a normal camcorder.

I don't have a camcorder with external inputs so that's why I'm not looking for just an external camera.
