Went to Rockport for the new years day bash.Weather was great and pleanty of mud.Took the AV-4 and the Bigfoot, and was pleased at how the AV-4 went everywhere the Bigfoot went.As of 3:00 pm when we left I was the only ATV that went thru the mud bog.Eventhe jeeps and trucks didnt try it.The only fault I can find is the drain trough drags to much,It doesnt get you hung up ,but I dont know how much dragging it will take to wear thru. I am already thinking of a metal skid plate for that area. Some terrain it even handles better than the Argo such as climbing and descending hills(believe me its true.) I dont think there is anything I havent thrown at it that it didnt go thru. Ive got 12 hours on it now so I can change the break in oil. Will post more possitive and negatives with more hours. Eddie

Hey Eddie it is good to read your report on the AV-4. It sounds very positive. How does it turn, does it feel strong when turning? Doesn't it have a skid plate as a standard feature? How is the leg space?

Jerry, It turns pretty good, but you can get the internal brakes hot enough you get some fade.It takes a little more effort when hot but still skids ok.The skidplate is more in front and back because it is a piece of plywood molded in for more strength.I fabricated a small plate at work today to add to the drain trough. The fiberglass is fairly thick in that area but if I scraped it hard this weekend then I want a little more protection from sharp rocks. About the leg space, it is a little hard to get your right foot on the right side of the levers, but once you do there is good room.It looks small in the cockpit but there is enough room for 2 good sized adults. (Note: upon further inspection I broke the drain plug ( thru hull housing ) it was plastic,so I welded up a new stainless one at work and will install it tonight.Maintenance jobs are great for govt. work. The only way I think it could of broke was to back into a rock. I knew what the Argo would do, So I pushed the AV-4 hard as I have ever rode.Rockport has some muddy rutted trails, short steep hills, waterholes and rocks. This machine handled everything reasonably well.(No I am not a paid spokesperson , and I dont play one on TV, But I will tell you this machine will go most places pretty well.)

Another quick thing I have found out, If you get real agressive with the throttle, you can get a load of mud and water inside of machine.Normal driving is ok but if you spin the wheels hard it throws it inside of machine. Next mod., mud lips around wheel openings . Eddie

I think something to put a harder surface on the fiberglass is a good idea. It doesn't handle the scrapes and gouges like the hdpe. I can tell you have gotten spoiled with the Bigfoot and amphibs you have had. When you start to worry about getting mud thrown on you and in the machine you have been spoiled! When I went to LEOR park it was a muddy day and 4 wheelers would drive by and crack the throttle and throw up rooster tails and the mud clods would get on me and in my machine. I got sort of ticked off about it at first then had to laugh at the irony of it. I'm sitting still in an inch of wet mud and I don't want to get dirty while the guys on 4 wheelers and motorcycles were unrecognizeable covered in mud and wet head to toe.

Is the Rockport you went to the one in Pike County North of Alton? That is not to terribly far from me I could meet you up there for a day of riding. I think it is time for another group ride.

Unregistered, I don't know of any clubs. There are members of this discussion board that get together for rides. This is an active group on the board from all over the country. People will attend rides from several states away. I think everyone is always looking for a new place and a fun group ride.

Like Eddie says where are you located? I get up to the Champaign, Danville Area fairly often. I am down in Southern Illinois in Carterville, which is between Marion and Carbondale. For looking at machines I set a date and allow a person a couple of hours to get a walk around then a test ride with me driving then they get to drive. That is the best way I have found to demonstrate the machine. Looking at one on a showroom floor doesn't do the machine or customer justice.

Sorry guys, for got to log in. I'm the Unregistered Guest....I'm new. I live 12 or miles south of Peoria in Mapleton a stones throw away from the IL river. I would like to drive a Bigfoot and Max IV side by side in a different array of terrain. Like I said I’m very knew and haven’t quite grasped the different transmission types. I don’t really want a 6X3 which I believe the trans in the Argo is. Plus the prices on the Max’s’ are right. So with that said I may have already made up my mind.

Hi Riding Fans! Have any of you ever gone riding at PADDY'S BLUFF RETREAT in Dycusburg, KY? I found this 650 acre ATV Park website and contacted the owner John Travis. Super Nice Guy! He said he would love to have any amphibious vehicles come and ride. He did say that there have been some there in the past. He said they are only open on SAT and SUN., as they work during the week. The website is www.paddysbluff.com. if any of you want to check it out. Phone John Travis 270-836-4297 for more details. If any of you have been there, please let us know how it compares to some other areas! I am looking for a new area to maybe sponser another large group ride get together, similar to the Ledges Ride!

Eddie,

You have a couple of places to ride up there by you and I have a couple down here. There really isn't much to it besides setting up a place and dates and contacting the area. I'm just talking a ride and not activities, contests, factory support, etc. I think a lot of big gatherings become annual and are sort of expected to be around the same time every year. May or early June would be a nice time. I would really like to set up something in Evarts KY. Being such a huge area there would be a lot of riding. When I run scuba trips I try and set them up a year in advance so people can organize their schedule, save money, and have equipment in order. I have been trying to get to Haspin Acres and Deepwater and everytime I would have a breakdown right before the ride. So to start a small meet and ride only gathering would be best for me.

Eddie, I wonder why we have them in the heat of the summer too! (I hate hot weather!) Believe it or not, we really lucked out at the Ledges the last 2 years. The weather could not have been better. Even had sweatshirt weather for the evening ride! Timing is the main reason for us like Jerry wrote. It is a good time of year for us as dealers and the best time to rent the property off the private owner at the Ledges. I agree, we need to get a little "get together - ride" going over your way sometime this spring or fall. Nothing needs to be real organized so to speak, just a good old time of everyone getting together with their families and friends in the 6x6 world. Eddie, we have never been to Rockport, what is it like? Do they have any creek beds, trails, ponds, or restroom facilities? Would that be a good place for a gathering?
Yes, so sad to hear about Troy. I met him and Bud at the Badlands years ago when we rode with you. You could tell he had a pure love for riding and spending time with his dad and friends. He was truly a fun loving 6x6er! He will be missed by many, in many ways!

Becky,The best way to describe Rockport is mostly timber trails. There are a few open areas with 2 man made ponds and also a mud bog pit. They also have a sled for pulls. There are no steep long hills but pleanty of steep small ones.Yes there is a creek andindoor plumbing and concession stand.Troy got a ride going there in 7-31-04 and had a small turnout. We told the owners that there has been as many as 50-60 at some rides. The park can support that number with 900 acres, they are also open to jeeps. If anyone would like to go to there website it is www.rorp.com. We were planning a spring or early summer trip to LBL but I think we will try Paddys Bluff instead. Also there is a place in Marsailles Il. called The Cliffs ,It is supposed to be as good as Rockport. Eddie

I am going to Paddy's Bluff on Saturday January 28th, 2006. I write up a complete review. I will also check out Williams Hill Pass by Harrisburg, IL. I have not been there so I'll try and check it out on Friday or Sunday if I don't break anything at Paddy's on Saturday.

Is there any specific information anyone wants me to gather on the recon of the sites? Or are there any other sites around Southern Illinois anyone wants a report on for a group ride? St. Joe in Missouri is a nice big place for a group ride. I also have Little Egypt within 15 miles from me.

Update on the Cliffs Off Road Park , it is only 300 acres and charge 22.00 a day. I dont think I will try this one out, when there are bigger places for less money. Brandon have you been back to Finger Lakes, are they still enforcing to width rule? Eddie

Yes I am driving a new Max. I was going to take it out today but the place I was going was too muddy, so I didn't want to get it dirty. Thats a bad thing with me and new toys. I'm going to get it dirty on Friday and Saturday.

Jerry, Let us know how it is ,I am thinking of going some time spring or early summer. It is a shame you are going to be so close to LBL and not get to check it out also.Schedule a couple of days for this place,as I have always considered this the grandaddy of riding areas. Eddie, When are you going to LBL? I was going to wait a little before going there. I've been told by some local 4 wheeler riders they closed off some areas due to soft ground and environmental impact...ruts. You are correct it is not far at all.

Jerry, last year when I was down there,I saw a few places that were taped off .This was a very minimal area next to the park road. They also closed off driving in the water where there is camping.Unless they have closed off entire areas ,this is very minor. Eddie We will go when it warms a little bit ,the wife dont like the cold.

As soon as I know something I will post for anyone interested? No if you have a rollbar with seatbelts you are ok.I took a helmet with me last year and asked the rangers personally .I didnt want to assume it was ok so I got the word right from them.Rules can change though, so I always throw a helmet in just in case.

troy do you mean rear wheels are tilted in at top or tilted out at top?
can be from bent, broken or cracked frame,
can be from worn bushings,
can be from wrong location for bearing mounting holes if it has bin modified with inner bearings.
~ shit like that ~

Eddie, Wish you was able to go. I've been there when they were new. Troy Moore's first ride there infact. I'll catch you there later. Rick

I went to St.Joe over the weekend,My cousin wanted to demo a argo.He talked to a dealer on the phone after he seen a couple of them at stjoe the last time he was there.I told him I'd go since i'm going to rockport the 18th. And need to make sure things looked happy on the Bigfoot. He loves them and said he getting one. He's most likely going to rockport too to check them out more and because he hasn't been there yet.My buddy Mark will be going too. Rick

Their website is www.rorp.com They are in Rockport Illinois, it is North of St. Louis or Alton if that helps with a mental picture.

I'm still going to Rockport Sat. My buddy Mark said he's going too. So there's going to be 2 Bigfoots there for sure. All are welcome to freeze their butts off with us. They are calling for cold around 32. I don't care I work outside anyway. Adam and his buddy was there last time i was with their max4s. I hope they can make it. If not I'll ride with you guys again soon. Later, Rick

I would like to go but I have to work this weekend. My days off are w/th so no weekend rides for me for a while.Too bad the weather won't hold out for a couple of more days. The 50 degree temperatures would be much bettr than the expected 30s.

Anyone wanting to try Rockport,Better go soon. The 329 acres containing Tall Dog trail and Back 40 will close June 30. The leased land was sold out from beneath Tom and Debbie.By cutting the park by this much they are going to move Rockport to nearby Hannibal. This is going to be a Jeep only park. The front half of Rockport will operate the same ,Jeep and 4 wheel atv until new park opens. I went there this weekend in the jeep, but am going back june 17 on 6x6. This is a great place to ride, anyone that can go should go before they close the back half, and before it closes for good. P.S. It was bought for the reason of reselling it to an outfitter, for out of state hunting.Tom has also worked with this person, and got stabbed in the back.Man I sure hate to see this...
