Questions for those who may know? Is the T-20 the only transmission ever used in a Hustler? I saw AATV which looked like a Hustler with atv-7000 transmission like the ones in an Amphicat. |

The ATV-7000 was an Attex transmission and I don't think Amphicat ever used it- they had their own. Hustler used a different transmission in their earlier models that looked something like Amphicat's, if I'm remembering correctly. |

The trannys in the amphiacat were made by ODG Ontario Drive & Gear same company that produces ARGO |

I think I have a sticky intake valve on a 1985 Hustler/Briggs 18hp. Any tips for freeing it up without removing the head? |

Can anyone tell me what year hustler this is or any other information about it.I have always wanted a 6x6 and now I bought a basket case.
But it will soon run again.The tag says it's a hustler 880H with a Kohler K440 2ax engine.
Any help sure would be great.

You have a early 1970's HUSTLER, machine may have the cool option of a JET DRIVE for water use, many of these early models have it, if it has a T-20 trans, and you do a good job of rebuilding the machine, you will have something to be proud of.

Is the t-20 transmission set up like an open diff or when you have both levers forward does it act like it has a locker or does one side slip? |

It is not like a differential, it is more like two transmissions running off the same input shaft. Each side can operate independently of the other side. With both levers forward and the transmission in forward gear both sides pull forward, pulling back slightly will slip one side or the other dependng on the lever pulled. Pull back on the left stick will slip, then disengage, then finally brake the left side.
Some people even go with an independent shift lever for each side so they can put one side in forward and one side in reverse to be able to spin the machine under power to both sides and not just skidding one side.
Not a modification that is really necessary but it demonstrates both sides work independent of the other. |

Any ideas are welcome.I have cut all the axles out and making new ones.I have pulled the sub frame out of the fiber glass tub and found the frame work is pretty rough.Actualy really rough.So this weekend i am welding together a new sub frame.I'm looking for ideas or modifications that I should do to controls or giving this thing more strength.
I like building things right the first time but we all know how that goes.
Also does anyone know where to get the floor pans from.I I like to keep my feet out of the chains.HA ha. |

Hello Everyone:
I bought a hustler basket case like the one shown early but mine is red and needs more work. It came with T-20, but the motor and trans were sold early. I have seen Hustlers with the big Amphicat transmission in them. I have an Amphicat(trashed body)but good trans and a Sach 297 single 2 stroke motor.I would love to replace the T-20, but on a tight budget with twins on the way. Does anyone has any info on that set up. I will get with Mr Clark for bearing and seals.

how bads the t-20 you have?
any chance there might be someone in your area who has rebuilt a t-20 and would walk threw it with you?
it's true there have bin several vertions of the t-20 -spec wise, and so in order to be certin you get the right parts you will need alot of the right info when you order ether from mr clark or from recreativs, hopefuly your trans still has some sort of tags or other markings on it.
but replacements still an option, often you can get a whole basket case machine for less than a trany itself might cost, e-bay, local want ads, or newspaper ads are just a few ideas,
and you dont have to just serch for a hustler for parts,
attex,chapperal,recreatives max II and IV models also have the t-20, and then theres even more who used it as well! |

Hello David:
The Hustler did not come with the T-20 , it was sold early. I own a maxII also. The Hustler needs a frame off restoration. I plan to sell or trade the amphicat trans and frame and get a T-20 replacement.

I took the motor and bolted it to a pallet, cleaned off the years of dirt and oil from sitting around in a garage. The motor has not ran in nearly 13,14 years. I pulled the plugs and they looked spotless. Spent a few hours clening points and making new plug wires, mixed up some fuel, threw the jumper cables on it to the old truck battery and "POW" the old kohler lives again. Man she sounded good! |

Does anyone know where I can find "type A plate sprockets".I am replacing all of my sprockets.
I am replacing my drive sprockets from a 30 tooth sprocket to a 32 or possibly 34 tooth sprocket for more low end snap. |

Keith, Watch the clearance under the center axle sprocket. You should give it a bit of space so you don't eat a hole through the pan if you bottom out on a log or rock. I did the same thing on my Hustler to put 25" tires on it. |

Keith, if you want to give it more bottom end you may want to look for a larger driven converter. You may have to lift the trans a little bit to fit it. If I were to do it again I would go the converter route not the sprockets.
Salsbury made quite a few different sizes in the 70's. My hustler was a 16hp 4 stroke with a 8 3/4" driven converter. There are 9 3/4" and larger units that will fit the trans. |

I really would like 25 inch tires but it looks like the biggest it can handle is 22's.I did not know there were different size converters, I'll go measure mine to see what I have. Thanks for all the input. |

My Hustler was a 1980 vintage with the Poly body and the 25" Rawhide fit. You can see the restoration photos In the photos section #1
Pete Cagle also had a Later model Hustler and fit 26" with 12 " wheels on his. The only place the wheel clearance is down to about 1" is the top of the front fender area. |

Mine has a fiberglass body, is there a big weight difference between the two. Because of the way the body is built I don't think the bigger tires will fit.
I have been redesigning a new frame so I have thought of going to the poly style body, what do you think? I have a lot of questions..... |

Jet drive help? Does anyone have information or pics on the jet drive? I don't know if it had a water pump set up or a prop shaft set up. Did the dog clutch attach to the engine or transmission? Can't find any info on the web. |

Hello Keith;
How are you doing with your Hustler restoration?
I have few questions for you and anybody else who can answer them. First does your Hustler has the four bolt rims with the 21/12-8 tires on it? My Hustler has something like a two piece hub and axle combination. If this is so, can it be exchange a five bolt setup? I am still working on getting a replacement T-20 trans for it. Does any one have pictures of the Hustler layout with the single disk brake on the center axle? Please email them to me , any help would be greatly appreciate. Have any one done the split shifter on a Hustler like on some Max IIs and Max IVs? Since I am starting from nothing , that might be the way to go. I am beginning the tear down and I will get with Mr Clark for replacement parts.

I have been slowly working on my hustler.Mine has five bolt axle with an outer three bolt flange bearing, with 21x11x8 tires. I am having to make new axles since I had to cut out the old ones, I'm almost done with the axles.I do plan to run the split shifter on my hustler.
I will email you some pics of the teardown, it's not much but maybe it will help. |
