Inside the T-20, are either the bands or the drums covered with an abrasive layer/pad/coating, or is it metal against metal for braking?

Curious.

Yes Harry, The bands have a lining and the drums are bare.

I am planning a complete fluids change in the next couple of days. A mechanic friend has hooked me up with some metal treatment called Multi-Lube, which reduces wear and tear on metal components, but told me not to add any to the tranny if the braking action was metal-to-metal, as the treatment would defeat the mechanism. Since I know now that this is not the case, I will go ahead and add it to the fresh trans fluid.

BTW... I completed my chain swap this past weekend. I did what Brandon did, and went with all John Deere brand chain. All eight were replaced. What a job! Not as bad as I feared it might be, but not something I'd want to do before every ride!! It took us about 2 or 2 1/2 hours total. After we got off the old chain, we used some automotive Simple Green cleaner/degreaser and scrubbed down all of the sprockets and axles to remove the filthy old layer of gunk. Swapped out the old chain with the new and tightened and adjusted everything. Re-greased the axles and drive sprocket hubs with fresh moly-based lithium grease. What a difference. Slick and smooth now. And QUIET!

I'm going to switch to full synthetic oil this time around. I've got the part numbers for those hot four pronged Bosch Platinum +4 sparkplugs and the Fram oil filter (thanks again, Brandon!). I'm gonna take in the old air filter and see if I can find a suitable match for a Fram upgrade for it as well. With the full synthetic oil plus four ounces of the above-mentioned Multi-Lube, I'm confident that my 18hp Briggs will run a lot smoother and cooler, with more useable power throughout the entire RPM range.

I did an identicle swap in the 18hp Vangard in my new John Deere garden tractor last summer and the difference was amazing. Quicker, easier starts & more power, plus when I shut if off after mowing the engine was cool enough that I could put my hand on top of it without being burned. Oh sure it was still hot, but not like before where it would've cooked the palm of my hand. The full-syn oil + metal treatment will hopefully greatly extend the life of my MAX.

I will find out just what she'll do this coming weekend at the Superior Off-Road Vehicle's 5th annual Michigan Max-A-Rama. Yeeehaw!!
