I have a 1973 440 thundercheif with a single carb it is engine model number LR440-2.My owners manual states that there where 2 engines this year. The other engine model number is 2f 440-4 . JLO Rockwell I can copy the book If you would like it.

Hey Steve and fellow 440 Thunderchief owners- I just joined your ranks with my recent purchase. It has the 440JLO with twin Mikunis and seems to run out fairly well. Came with a an extra JLO with single carb I was thinking of rebuilding. I have only had the opportunity to run it on the frozen lakes, but it seems to go like a violated ape! I will need to replace throttle and choke cables shortly, and do some body work-has small crack on lower front corner. Look forward to some water work with it when the weather breaks. I do have a question though- Instructions call for a 20:1 fuel mixture-with the new synthetics available, can the ratio be safely reduced to cut down on the smoking? Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

I JUST PURCHASED SOME SYNTHETIC AMSOIL 2 STROKE OIL. THEY SAY TO RUN IT AT 100 TO 1!!! I HAVEN'T DONE IT YET. I'M ALSO WAITING TO HEAR FROM OTHERS.

yes, you could lean out the oil ratio with the new synthetic oil's available today. are you using synthetic oil at 20:1 now? if not, try that and see if you can live with smoke it produces. regardless of what some people will tell you, two stroke engines make more power, when they get a rich oil mix. all of the two stroke engines i've dyno'd made the most power at about 10:1. i operate my personal two strokes between 12:1-15:1.

Guys,
I use the synthetic Amsoil in my 400 Chief. The machine fouls plugs at 20-1 so I started running the Chief at 32-1. The machine does not smoke as bad and has good power. The machine is for sale check in the classified ads. Kemp

Thanks for all the info !! I guess I'll start running the synthetics at 20:1 and gradually reduce the ratio till the smokes subsides somewhat. Just think of all those miles I'll have to run- wooohoo. This site is amazing- the wealth of knowledge and experience here is incredible. My thanks to Richard and all those who are involved in the maintenance of route6x6. Hope everyone's story is a good one with happy endings.

I have a JLO 2f-340-1 twin which I am rebuilding. I need the torque spec's for the Heads and the Case bolts. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, torque the cylinder base nuts to 16/18 ft.lbs, and the cylinder heads to 28/32 ft. lbs.

Recheck the torque after you ride it a little. I heard a strange popping noise under load after I rebuilt my 440. I checked the head bolts and they were loose.

Do you have one or two carbs? I'm looking for an easy way to synch my two Mikunis with the air cleaner boots on. I already installed to vacuum ports on the intake adapters but a vacuum gage just bounces around. I thought of using a hose into a bucket of water but I've never tried this method and I'm scared I'll suck water into the engine.

Chirs, I forgot to ask what the Flywheel torque should be, would you know the ft.lbs for that?

Chris, Does your book say what the compression should be? I put new Piston and Rings in. I checked the cylinders with Calipers and they were to Manufacturer Spec for standard Rings and Pistons.( That's the only thing I could find out about this Motor ) When I checked the compression, I got 90lbs. I did have the intake and exhaust manifolds off when I checked it. Don't know if that would make a differance on not. I would think it would be more then 90lbs. I have a CCW Which I rebuilt and I got 149lbs.

joe, sorry neither book shows the compression. It sounds low at 90 I have always had 125 or better. I had one at 85 and it was not strong enough to pull gas into cylinder. The manifolds off shoud not make any diff in the compression.

Joe did you hone the cylinders before installing the new pistons? sometime this helps the new rings form a good seat.

Chris, I put the 340 on the bench,made some timing adjustments, primed the fuel line and it started right up. Maybe that's what the compression sould be for this engine. The compression readings were the same in both cylinders. I put it in the Coot and ran it around the yard and it has lots of power. If you want? You can take a look at the engine in the Coot at.

I checked the compression on my 440 after break in and I read about 120 psi on each cylinder. I thought that was great.

Yeah, the CCW 400 I have had a reading of 149psi in th cylinders and the was berfore I even started it. This 340 pops right off on two pulls, so I guess it must be ok, maybe my compression gauge is going bad.

So I just started up my JLO 2f 440-4 after I retimed it. It's been sitting for a while but boy did it run great until it got hott. I started to hear a pinging at almost max r's. My first instinct was to rinchin the high speed jets so i did like a 1/4 turn and it still didn't get rid of the pinging. So I shut it off and took a look at the plugs, the left cylinder (#1) plug looked a little leener then the right. My dad thinks that it could be one of the crank seals. But before I tear it apart I was wondering if anybody has any other ideas that could fix the problem, maybe vacum or air leak or sumthing? Any help will be much apreciated.
