I boutght a Max IV with a 440A Kawasaki motor with some kind of home made exhaust. The engine runs well until you put it in gear and then it bogs down. If I remove the K&N air filter it runs better but still not right. Anyone able to help Id appreciate it. Can anyone tell me where I can find an original exhaust or a exhaust that will work properly. Im lost Id love to ditch the 2 cycle but I cant afford a 4 cycle. Maybe id be better off finding a used rotax and dropping it in. Also does anyone know what plugs i should be using. It has NGK B8ES plugs now i thought about using hotter plugs.

It sounds like it may be running rich. What carb is on it? Two-strokes are a blast but probably not as practical in a trail machine. The Kaw 440 is a good engine and no less trouble than a Rotax, so you may not be any further ahead going that route. I used B8ES in all the K440s that I've had and never had a problem. I'm not sure what's recommended, but the NGK won't foul as quick as most.
