Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum but have been doing some research on an ATV. I need one to plow my 500 foot non-flat driveway in the winter. I also border a 100 acre state owned pond so the AATV sounds like a fit. Here's what I found. A 1999 Max IV, 20 HP Kohler, 230 hours, looks brand new from the photos. I mean, not a single spec of dirt inside or out. Also has a roll cage and heated throttle cable, seatbelts, etc. It does not have the bearing cages (or whatever they're called!) for mounting the plow, or a winch so I would need to buy and install them. They're asking $3750. Is that too much? I've seen some on ebay going for much less...granted they might need work. This one only (might) need outer bearings. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
Also, does anyone know what year Max improved their axles? I understand at one point they had splined axles. Anything else I should be aware of or look out for when purchasing something 10 years old? Thanks!!! -Keith |

Keith From what I know MAX splined, the so called improvement is really a step backwards, the splined axles are much weaker, most folks like the older design which are solid round axles, without the silly groves which really make the axles 1" Changing bearing is a big job.
Be aware most of the used machines on the market need LOTS of repair, no matter what the seller tells you. I suggest you BUY A GOOD ONE say from a good dealer, at least for the first one, otherwise you may get to know the parts guy (Richard) really well, I also suggest you call him to get his take on this issue, He will not try to sell you a new machine, because they do not sell new machines! Hope this helps
