I have a 2005 B&S 18 HP Vanguard engine in my 1987 8X8 Argo. I could not keep up to my buddies and their Argos. I thought I had a clutch problem but I have come to discover that my engine is governed too low. This is causing a lack of power and speed. Does anyone know how to properly adjust the governor? I do not want to over-compensate and over rev it.

You will not get anymore power by changing the governor setting. You can gain some speed ,by bending the governor tang.I recommend getting a tiny tach before trying this and shoot for 4200-4400rpm range. Eddie

I will give that a try. The lack of power is caused by the low RPMs. It is more noticeable when I try to turn or when I run the tracks in the snow. I was barely moving last winter, but the engine had low RPMs. As mentioned in my first thread, speed is my biggest hurdle. I have been running this way for the last 18 months. The only time it bothers me is when I am trying to follow others. thanks for the post.

I made my own tang bending tool using a 5/16" x 6" bolt. I slightly straightened the tang. Problem solved. I wish I would have posted a year ago. My Argo is 1987 8X8 with a 2005 engine. I rebuilt the tranny in 2007, new chains in 2008. The only problem was speed. It took 2 minutes to correct. Thank you. Next year, I will buy 8 new 22" Argo tires, then I should be good for a few years.
