Hello Group.
I have an Argo 6x6 Vangaurd 2 with a 16HP
Briggs and Stratton Vanguard motor.
How do I go about removing the starter motor?
Anyone do this before?
Thanks in advance for any and all tips. |

Sorry to say but you will have to remove engine first then there are tow bolts holding starter on, one of these bolts are hard to get to, Briggs uses a special flex u-joint socket, then starter just lifts off

After rereading my post, i ment to say there are 2 bolts to remove, it is a sham I can not spell

Something else to remember, Briggs sold those starters with both plastic and steel drive gears, they are not interchangeable for any reason

There's also several different variations of the plastic gear assy, not the gear itself, but the retaining hardware, etc. If you get a plastic gear, get a real briggs one, not an aftermarket one. The aftermarket plastic doesn't hold up as well. The plastic geared starters use an aluminum ring gear. A metal gear, if one was made, would wear the aluminum teeth. A steel ring gear is made, but it won't fit/replace an aluminum ring gear. Briggs sells a real starter, and a flywheel made for the steel ring gear. It comes on vanguards designed to start under a load, like fluid pump applications. People who build performance vanguards use them, having higher compression ratios and having lost the compression release when replacing the stock cam. |

I amy look to upgrade my engine, as I hear the plastic gears strip pretty easy. I will wait until I have the engine out for some reason. Jack |
