when i first bought this wheeler it ran for about twenty minutes then after that i could not get it to fire at all. it acts like it wants to go but just wont. i think i may have the wrong gas mixture. if anyone can help me that would be great. i really dont want to sell it but i feel like i have tried everything. |

Hi, Tony;
The ST300D is a pretty simple machine and you should be able to get it running again without too much trouble. Have you checked for ignition spark? If not, pull the plug out and check to see if it's wet or dry. If it's wet, you probably have no spark. Lay it on the side of the head (not right near the hole in case the top end of the cylinder is loaded up with fuel) turn the engine over with the key on and watch for spark. This will at least get you pointed in the right direction to find the problem. Keep us posted on how you're doing. |

Don,
Thanks for the reply. i took the plug out and checked for spark. it has plenty of spark and really sounds like it wants to go. it will make a puff every time, acting like it doesnt have enough to go over again. do you think it could be out of time. do you know anything about the proper fuel mixture too. thanks |

Originally they called for 20:1 with petroleum oil, but they run as well and smoke less if you use a good synthetic two-stroke oil at 40:1 or even 50:1. You won't foul plugs nearly as often, either. Does this machine have the stock Tillitson carburetor? If it does, I'd either install a new diaphram kit or change it out for a Mikuni. The Tillitsons will run great as long as you keep new kits in them, but you'll be replacing them fairly often.
If the engine was running at first, I doubt it's out of time now. It may be something to check on if the carb isn't the problem.

Don,
Actually it does have the stock Tillitson carb on it and i just put a rebuilt kit in it last week and it is still doing the same thing to me. I have never heard of Mikuni maybe i should try that. This thing seems like it just drinks the gas when you try to start it too, should it have some kind of regulator on it at all.

Where are the adjustment screws set? They should be about 1 1/2 turns out to start with. Inside the Tillotson, there is a needle and seat to regulate fuel flow. You may want to dive back in and check the settings on the needle. All it takes is one piece of crap in there to hold the needle open. |

One of my tricks is using a contact solution bottle with fuel mix in it. You can spray it into the carb while trying to start it and also keep the engine running for a while with it. If you are using clear fuel line, you should be able to see the fuel flowing with the engine running. |

Thanks for the advice. i'll get that carb back off and check that out and find some good synthetic two stroke oil and get a good mix of gas going and see if that doesnt straightin me out. i'll keep ya posted. |
