I have a 2005 conquest, and I get a rattle once in awhile from the front left chain, it seems to rattle right on the floor board. I looked at the tensioners, but I don't seem to understand the concept of the adjustment.

Hi Ed- How are things in Whitby? I think the nylon pads in my Avenger are longer but the concept is identical. AS the power is delivered from the front axles rearward the chain is stretched tight on the top half as it pulls the axle behind it. Any slack in the chain hangs between the bottom of the sprockets. The exact opposite is true,I think, on the chain that takes the power foreward from the idler shaft to the front axle. This process is reversed when we back up. When the slack occurs on the half of the chain where the tensioner is located,if there is sufficient slack, the tensioner is designed to rotate , pushed by the spring till the next notch on the semi- circular stair pattern catches on the cross piece and holds the tensioner there. If the stair steps wear smooth they sometimes don't hold and need to be replaced. The newer pads are bigger with bigger steps to last longer,maybe?  |
