Just recently I have been experiencing a problem with my 91 Magnum. It drives great in forward but while in reverse it wants to slip back to neutral. If you ease into it to get moving and don't attempt to turn while backing up it will sometimes stay in but more often than not the trans slips out of gear. Is there anything a guy can do to correct this or is it time for a rebuild. The machine has 600 hrs on it. Thanks in advance. |

I had that problem last summer after my rebuild. Unfortunately, when i put it back together, I put the reverse idler gear the wrong way. The gear is roughly 3/4" of an inch wide but because I put in the wrong way, only 1/8" was catching the sliding gear, causing it to slip out. In my situation, if I held the shifter, i was OK. The minute i'd let go, it would slip out. What is the serial Number of your tranny? It is on the top of the tranny. |

I did a bit of checking in the material I have. The serial No. of your Magnum probably starts with NKB . The tranny probably starts with MR or HR. If so here is the fiche for that tranny. I had to reduce quality to post. I can email them to you if you want them. Just let me know.   |

Thanks for the reply but the number of the tranny is actually MA 16306 whether or not this model is different I am not sure. Maybe worth breaking the cases apart and inspecting this idler gear. Any other info would be great. Thanks again |

OK, I will do more checking. Those transmissions are almost all the same. But I will try and provide you with the right fiche. |

I have done more checking and I found the parts diagram for the MA tranny in the 1989 Argo Magnum Parts Manual. Hope these help. Good luck. I am pretty sure it has to be 4. Reverse Idler or 7. Double Gear. I doubt it is the double gear because forward gears would also be affected. Here they are:
