Splined axel has a hex set screw holding sprocket to axel. Screw is froze and hex got rounded off. Tried drilling it out but it is super hardened steel. Any tips?? I have the inner and outer bearing retainer set screws out but can't get the sprocket screw removed.

Bill, We know that splined axle == newer machine. If it's a Max , then not too new cause they use snap rings now. Without knowing what kind of machine, I would say that it's probably too late to use heat to release the red Locktite that I know Max use. I would say either get a few good drills and get the set screw out or cut the axle off with an angle grinder. Best wishes and Good Luck. |

Just what Philip said, get some cobalt bits and start with a thin one then drill through the set screw then use a larger bit. If the drilling gets hot enough you may be able to use an easy out to screw it out after you get a hole in it. A lot of times it is easier to drill it all the way then retap the sprocket. Worst case cut the axle then put it back together after getting the sprocket off. |

See if you can get your hands on some left hand drill bits and a reversible drill.Go ahead and heat the screw anyway to a nice red then let it air cool-do not quench- once this has been done you will have accomplished two things.1st the locktite will be gone.2nd the slow cooling SHOULD have softened the screw.Now with the drill in reverse and a left hand bit of the right size start drilling.At some point the drill should catch and when it does the screw will back right out.I use this method and it works well although I sometimes have to repeat the heating-cooling process.There is also a new screw extractor being advertised on tv which seems to work the same way but I don't remember the name of it right off. |

Gregg= I have not tried a left hand rotating drill bit, but it sounds like an idea worth trying when the need comes up. |

Been a while since I posted this but I did end up cutting the axel to get everything out. Upon replacement, the inner bearing flange cracked. Not in half, but part of the cast flange cracked when I was taking the old bearing out. I lubed everything up and put it all back together and it works fine. Any problems if I run this way for a while as long as I keep it dry in there and keep it greased?
That axel replacement is a b^*&h! My Max was abused by a previous owner and I suspect stored outdoors where water sat in the tub. As a result, the brake disk, sprocket and collars were not easy to get out. I was able to get the set screws out of most parts but the outer lock collar would not budge. Ended up taking the bearing flanges off and cutting the axel in half to get it out. It should come apart very easy in the future. |

Bill, thanks for the update.Yes, your last post on this was March! Cracked cast flange? should be OK. If it keeps the bearing in place,good to go.Might want to keep one on hand,in case you are in there for some other reason anyway.Happy riding. |

Thanks Phil. The Max is running good now. I got busy with other things and wasn't riding much - hope to do that a lot more now. I'm hoping to change my max RPM to 4,000 on the 18 HP Vanguard. Any idea how that is achieved? |

The idle on my kohler 25 in the maxiv was set at 3950 when I got it. I think the setting is easy but I hope somebody who has done it will chime in. You can never go wrong calling Dan at R.I.He's a great guy. |
