Hi everyone
I am looking for advice on the purchase of a low hours 2003 Max IV 900T. I drove the unit this week and its almost impossible to shift between gears.
The owner can shift it if he is moving but its very difficult to change gears while stopped. I myself couldnt do it without fear of bending the shift lever.
Whenever the owner shifts the tranny there is a grinding sound half the time.
Other then this problem the Max IV is in great condition. Is this shifting problem indicative of a failing tranny?
Should i stay clear of this unit?

Snookey 318--Believe it or not, there is nothing wrong with the tranny in the Max iv 900T. That tranny is hard to shift and the newer the harder. More hours, they get a little easier. If you force them you can bend the linkage or shear the little shifter pin. Neither of those are expensive fixes but a pain. The tranny is a world famous T-20. -really two trannys-one for each side. getting all the mecanicals shifted for one side is easy , then you have to jiggle the machine til things line up and let the other side shift too. With practice you will learn to shift easily. If you buy the machine-change the tranny fluid right away 28 oz. of F type automatic trans fluid and 4 oz. of GM limited slip differential additive. Will I'll concur with Philip, I have the same model.Did bend my shift lever and did gusset it up a little as part of the repair. Definitely change fluid and add additive will turn smoother,takes the growl out of it when turning slow and tight.The hard shifting or the growl means nothing. F fluid is harder to find but not impossible,it has friction enhancers in it. |

I got the 2004 850 model and at first the shifting was tough. After some time they loosened up. At times, I'd have to rock in the seat back and forth to get it to shift.
Last year I installed the shifting rod updates from Richard and it worked much better. |

I too have the route6x6 shift kit installed, no machine shifts much better, the best money i ever spent on a improvement, RI needs to install these "kits" on all new machines
