dose anyone have any ideas for getting the axels out of a max II with splined axels? i have the inner bearings off the axel but i cant move the sprockets, the set screw is out. this is the center axel that has the set of three sprockets. |

Don't be in a rush to diassemble axles and bearings. When I did mine last year I spent extra time in soaking bearing collars and axles with PB blaster before attempting to take apart. When I started to put back together I used anti-seize on the axle and slid into the bearing. DON'T GET ANTI-SEIZE INTO THE BEARING . Hope this helps. |

well here is what i dont understand, that set of sprockets move freely 3/8" that is it, there are no burs or anything of such that would stop it from sliding off, and like i said the set screw is completly out. i have soaked them in wd-40 and beat the hell out of them with a hammer. i have thought about using a bottle jack to try to press them off. i didnt have any problems getting the bearings or the collars off. |

R.J.-I hesitate to mention this because it is very unlikely, besides you would have seen it but for a while RI. tried putting TWO set screws in each sprocket ON TOP OF EACH OTHER??? one to hold the sprocket in place and the other to hold the one that.s holding? Tim "mudbuster" reported that problem on his Max IV a few years ago. Thought i'd mention it. Is your plow getting lots of use?? |

Good idea Phil! So you have a completely loose axle and you can't get it out of the tub because the sprocket is too big to get out of the tub? |

philip, that is a very good thought, but i would think that i would see it if that is the case, im gonna check tomarow, i got a slide hammer that i think is gonna get alot of use, that is what i have in mind for the next step. and as far as the plow, i have plowed the whole neighborhood out this winter it is working great. i had to add a top link to make on and off easy.

philip your idea with the 2 set screws was the right answer, but i took the slide hammer to it before i got your post, so that means that the one that was left in there is all f***ed up now and i cant get it out now so i think that im gonna have to drill it out and re tap it. so i guess that i will know what to do with the other side.
for some reason the center sprocket on the set of 3 is missing teeth and broke the chain, i think that it is an alignment problem. so im gonna get the sprockets out and take them to the machine shop and have them turn the center one out on both the left and the right side of the machine, once that is done im going to weld in a #50-23 tooth sprocket. that will be a loss of about 4 mph but in turn will give me more power on the bottom end. i will keep everyone updated |

Since you are going to rebuild the sprocket you could just get rid of the set screw and use a bolt. |
