I just picked up a Argo 8x8 Magnum 1992? last week. I changed the oil/filter/plugs and rebuilt the carb last weekend and now runs great with just ~200 hours on the unit. I would like to know how to change the fluid in the trans. and with what kind of oil. The chains have no grease on them and I would like to lube them, but gain how and with what kind of oil? Does anyone know were I can get an owners or maintenace manual on this? Thanks for any help in advanced. |

I won't get into how or what kind of oil to do a transmission change with, as I am only familiar with my 98 Bigfoot. As for the owners manual, they are advertised on the home page of this web site. Down near the bottom on the right, if I remember correctly. As for lubing the chains, the best way I have found is to remove the floor pans and the firewall so you can see all the chains. Get in the machine, fire it up and start driving slowly. Now you can spray the chains as they rotate. Be careful that you don't get anything tangled up in the chains, like pant legs or fingers. You'll be able to tell where you started spraying by observing the lube on the chain. Some guys lift the machine by the belly and with both sides tires off the ground the same thing can be done.
As for the lube Argo sells it's own brand and it works fine. I've owned my machine for 9 years and it has almost 900 hours on it and i'm still running the original long chains and I buy any chain lube that is waterproof. I think it is far more important to lube on a regular basis(every 20-25 hours)than the brand of the lube.
Congrats on your new machine, I think you'll find as I have, an Argo is a tough reliable machine that requires only a little regular maintenance to operate reliably.

Transmission oil, usually 80/90 hypoid oil(rear end oil/transmission oil same) there should be a square head nut at the rear(below shifter at bottom) to drain, to fill, use the dipstick at the top. |

Mark I have used regular motorcycle chain lube for many years with excellent results, just do not put too much on, it just comes off and makes your machine dirty

Thanks everyone. I changed the transmission with Lucas 80/90 gear oil and it seem OK. I lube the chains with chain wax I got at Gander Mountain. The only thing that was not working was the bilge pump, and that was a bad switch. The next day the engine would not turn over, found a bad starter solenoid. The Lucas unit could not be found and used a Ford unit. Now I am building a winch plate for a winch I picked up at Harbor Freight $69 for a 3k Remote Control unit.

Mark, make sure you put a grease gun to ever grease nipple on the machine. That's where some cost or long hours will come into play on an older machine if an axle bearing goes on you. Some of the nipples are really buried, so check every axle location where it passes through the frame and exterior. |
