Well after getting my Max back together after rebuilding my tranny, I now have a starter or starting problem.
Every once in a while the starter works fine. Some times now almost all the time I turn the key and I only hear a click. Also the wire from the battery to solinoid gets very very hot. Also the starter gets hot. Could this be a bad solinoid? The battery has been on a charger and seems to burn the lights bright.
Thanks for any help.
Eddie

Eddie

I am no expert, but I think you should check all your grounds (-), take everything loose, sand connections and all metal parts they attach to, check motor ground strap, take it loose to and sand all connections.

Hope this helps

Eddie,You may want to pull the starter and confirm the bushings are tight.Run the starter to make sure it turns freely. If starter checks out ,sounds like the solenoid is only partially engaging, that is why you hear the click, but it isnt making good contact inside causing the heat in the starter.I think the problem is the solenoid. I took the solnoid to AutoZone, they tested it and said it was good. I heard a clicking sound as he tested it.

I hooked jumper cables to my Car and it does the same thing just clicks.

I guess next is either the starter or switch? Im npot sure how to get the starter off.

I pulled the housing off the starter and one of tha magnets in the starter housing is broken in pieces and was jamming in the motor. I am having the hardest time finding out the correct starter for this Vanguard 18 hp B&S. whats bad theres a B & S factory about 30 miles from me

A local lawnmower fix it shop should be able to help you out as the B&S are used in many of the riding mowers. I used to buy most of my engine parts from a local guy.
Good luck.
