I got my Max II out recently and rode it around a while. When I first started riding the tranny worked fine. When I pulled up to park it, I could not get it out of forward. I rocked it, got out and rocked it, cranked it back up and tried moving the sticks to try to get it out of gear and nothing has worked. Any ideas? Thanks.

before deside to take apart the t-20 to fix it, check linkage of forward, neutral, reverse in order to see if lack of oil or any object is blocking the system. otherwise, you reach the t-20 repair fun time!!

Where should it be oiled and what kind of oil? As far as I know, it has enough transmission fluid, but I'll double check. I'll also disconnect the linkages to see if the diamond-shaped paddles move freely. Do they just slide out or is there a keeper of some sort holding them in?

I really hope I don't have to rebuild the tranny right now. :P

Aubrey, My guess is probably linkage or the tranny shift levers are gunked up from crud. The diamond shaped piece where the linkage hooks into the tranny are the shift levers (one on each side). Move these by hand and if they won't move, pull them straight up (clean around them well to keep stuff out of your tranny) If you have to pull these out to clean around them, check the nubs - if they have flat spots, you should replace them. While the shifters are out, check the groove the nub goes into and make sure it is not chipped anyplace. The shift levers are the only piece that can be replaced without tearing down the T-20. When you put them back in, put a glob of Vaseline all around the top to keep any crud from going down in the crack (there is an o ring there to seal out stuff, but a lot of stuff can fill the space preventing easy movement.

I have had this problem with my max II. Basiclly the shift levers (diamond shaped part on top of the trans attached to shift linkage) rotate too far forward and can't be rotated back with the shift handle. Getting it unstuck is a bit of a pain because it will be hard to get the floor pan out with the shifter in forward. It could be either side sticking, so if this doesn't work on one side, try the other. Do this with the engine off and wheels blocked so the machine doesn't try to roll if it comes out of gear. If you can lift the floor pan up enough to get your hand in there, grab the piece of linkage (5/16"bar) that goes from the hand lever to the shift lever as close to the trans end as you can. Pull it toward the outside of the vehicle as you lift up on the hand shift lever. You may have to jiggle the the hand lever a bit. This should allow the shift lever to rotate back into nuetral. If this works I'll let you know how to fix it. If this is the problem you can live with it temporarily by pushing the shift handle down just far enough to engage forward when shifting into forward.

Yes, petroleum jelly - it has lots of uses (but I'm not going to go into that) - especially in T-20 work. use it to hold gears, washers and gaskets in place.

For an update:

Dan: I opened the engine cover and could reach both sides of the transmission without having to pull the seat up. The left (driver's) side moved freely. The right side clicked when I pulled outward on the shaft. After that, I could get it out of gear. I tried shifting back and forth and could not get it to stick again, but I would like to hear what fix you have for it. :P

Fred: I removed both of the shifters and did not find a flat spot on either. I cleaned and jellied them.

Isaac: I checked the transmission fluid and it is full. I didn't see/feel any obstructions.

Thanks, guys for all of the info.

Aubrey,
The fix for my max involved replacing the shift levers and shifter hold down plates with new. The shift levers on mine were a little worn, and the new hold down plate looked like they were a different design then my old ones. Since your shift levers look ok, adding/replacing the plates may fix it.

If you have an older max you may have snap rings that hold the shift levers into the trans and no plates. In this case you can install the plates and leave out the snap ring. This makes future service much easier.

When the shift levers are moved forward, they will hit the plates before hitting the trans, keeping them from going too far forward and getting stuck.

To install the plates, press the shifter as far into the trans as it will go. Then install the plate so there is a slight gap betwweeen the plate and the shift lever. This prevents the shift lever from being forced against the rotating parts in the trans and causing wear.

Your shifter will probably only stick if push it hard into forward, as far as it will go. If you can remember not to do this, you may not need to do any repair. I forgot a few times when I was in a hurry, so I had to fix it.

I can take a picture of mine and e-mail it if you want or I can try to post it.

Thanks, Dan. Mine does have the plates that hold the levers in. I'll double check them to make sure they are installed correctly. I may look at getting new plates of the shifters sticking gets to be a problem.
