I would appreciate opinions on what portable winch to buy for pulling out my 1/2 ton pickup and using for my Max II. I want the flexiability to use on both. I've been using a 4 ton come-along and works fine in a pinch, but it's getting to "labor intensive"! Thanks!

Tim,

I think you would be hard pressed to find a portable winch that would be up to the task of pulling your pickup if it were truly stuck. The figure I heard was 3x the vehicle weight. On the portable side Polaris just came out with a new product called the Versawinch. It's unly reated for 1500 lbs but with a snach block you could double that amount. I too like the idea of a portable winch to be able to pull from any angle.

You can gt reciever winches (Warn etc make them), so that they are portable between anything with a 2" ClassIII hitch. They'll get you on the quick connect wiring though.
A come-a-long is all that is needed for an ATV/AATV. Sure the elecric winch is nice to have but I find about half the time I use the come-a-long as they easily pull out the Argo. Then just focus on something for your truck.

I use a gas powered rule winch. It is powered by a chainsaw engine. I prefer it over the electric winches I have. Its mounting options are endless and it's portable so you can throw it in whatever whenever. Electric winches are too taxing on the electrical system for me, even with upgraded electrical components.

I use a Simpson Capstan Winch powered by a chain saw engine, http://www.capstanropewinch.com/WinchFrameset.htm.
Or try http://www.portablewinch.com for a version with the engine mounted.
Either one use any length rope (not too short) so you are not limited to 12 or 24 feet pulls.
I haven't yet had to use this to pull my MAX II but I do pull tree length logs with mine, a Simpson winch, cost about $450 plus shipping.
