Well, after messing around a bit with some metal, and thinking of making a top for my Argo for foul weather, I finally decided to forgo the metal, and I bought some 1 1/2" schedule 40 PVC. I have some boat canvas coming my way, and I'll be buying some plastic for the windows from a local shop. I'll also need to find some heavy duty zippers or something too. Has anyone done something like this before? I hope it turns out as good as I'm thinking it will in my head. |

Josh, you might want to check a local spa or pool cover company and have them do the stitching with the zippers and windows. The only question I have about the PVC is its durability. It does not flex well in cold temps. I would think that you would break it traveling on rough terrain and any kind of abuse would be a big concern. Shifting loads, using the PVC as grab bars by mistake, etc. I would still look at metal or aluminum tubes as the most sturdy |

I can stitch the stuff myself. I was just wondering if anyone else has done this using PVC? I'm not wanting it for a roll bar or anything, just something to hold the canvas top. |

Josh I don't see why it wouldn't work. It would be a lot easier being able to glue all the joints together. Other than the PVC being a little more fragile it would be a lot lighter, and easy to handle. Let me know how it works and I hope you can find smeone that has done this before |

sounds like a good idea,i also considerd that method before building my top.only thing that comes to mind as a negative is i was afraid it would squeak big time.if it does fill it with spray foam!post a pic when your done so we can see.good luck. |

it will be at least a week or two. I ordered my canvas off of e-bay, and hopefully I'll get it this week. I already have a bit of my PVC stuff, and I have yet to get the plastic for the windows, and a few heavy duty zippers. I'm going to make the top piece so it snaps on, and covers where the sides snap on. I have plexi for a windshield already. I was hoping to get some thinner plexi, but that will happen later. |
