I have a 16hp briggs vanguard that sometimes will start and sometimes will just backfire through the carb. |

I could really use some help with this. I pulled both valve covers and the valves are not sticking. This is a 1995 Max but it only has a couple of hours use on it. PLEASE HELP!!! |

I'm only taking a stab at it, but if you type "backfire through carb" in your search engine, just about every one tends to indicate bad timing or that the points/condenser are worn and causing advanced timing. Too early a spark and it will flash back though the carb. |

Scott, It sounds like bad fuel to me; either water or gunk. Drain the tank, all the hoses and the fuel filter (replacing the fuel filter is OK). Get some 4 Power from a Conklin dealer (nothing else is going to do the job - and no, I do not sell Conklin products),
http://www.conklin.com/catalog/products.asp?p_catid=49, fill the fuel line with straight 4 power and mix about two ounces in a quart of gas (four times the recommended strength) and put the quart of mixture in the gas tank. Get an empty spray bottle (or mister) and put some 4 power in it. Spray some 4 power in the carb (put the air cleaner back on) before starting the engine. Once the engine is running, probably running rough, spray some 4 power into the carb to clean out the jets. It will most likely idle rough or not at all. Run the quart of mixture through the engine and you should be good to go (might take two quarts). I use 4 power on a regular basis and everyone should use some sort of gas line conditioner or Stabil.
If there are only a couple of hours on the machine, it most likely isn't something wrong with the parts. If you would rather tear the carb down, that is your other option. |

Thanks for the help. I took the carb apart and it was clean. I ended up taking the front cover off and I found the coil kill wire was pinched under the cover and what was happening was the fan would move the wire and it would chaff on the cover. There was one very small spot that would bounce against it and short the coil causing it to intermittently miss. I disconnected it and it runs perfect.
Now , where can I purchase that black wire that goes between the coils and the ignition switch. |
