My 2003 Max II with 18hp Briggs is getting tempermental when trying to shift into reverse. I changed the tranny fluid and added the limited slip additive about 10 hours worth of driving ago.
It just started acting up when I try to shift into reverse. I can get in gear no problem when the engine is off, but if it is running I can only get it in and out of Forward. When I try to shift into Reverse, it acts like it wants to bind up.
I do not force anything, and have to turn the engine off to shift it into reverse. Getting it out of reverse and into neutral with the motor running is no problem, and no problem going into forward from reverse.
Any ideas?

How tight are the chains? Have you tightened them recently? Is the transmission mounting solid and is the transmission parallel to the engine? Is the shift lever touching the floorboard? Are you pulling back part way on the levers before you shift, does it matter if you rock the machine back and forth? |

The chains are not too tight, I last adjusted them about a year ago, and prefer that they be a hair loose versus tight.
The tranny is in the same position as when manufactured. I have not moved it.
The shift lever does not touch the floorboard.
I know that you have to pull the levers back halfway to shift, and tried rocking the machine as well as reaching out and slightly turning a wheel to see if it is in a bind.
This is puzzling. |

Have you lubricated all the linkage pivot points ?
I had a hard time shifting my Max IV. Due to pressure washing,dust and dirt, it was really hard to shift. I sprayed all the linkages with lube and it works smooth as can be. |

Have you disconnected the shift linkage and tried shifting each side by hand?
Are the clutches fully disengaging? Has the idle speed been changed?
Althogh you have not moved the transmission it could have vibrated loose and moved ever so slightly out of alignment. |

Bud, In addition to what others have suggested, check for crud on top of the shifters (where the linkage connects to the tranny). |

It must have been a little crud in the linkage. Everything was lined up, and I worked the shifter through the ranges by hand while watching for binding. It runs like a champ now, and I used it to haul stuff out to cut up firewood for next year and drag some logs out of a creek bed.
