I have a 70's Argo with knobby tires on it. It does float in water, but I have not been able to get it to move forward with these knobby tires. I was thinking of getting a pair of sand paddle tires for the back. Has anyone tried this, or have any insite? I don't really want to get rid of all my knobby tires, as the are still in good condition, and go well through the mud. |

This is a typical problem related to replacement tires. Personally I would not use the sand tires because they provide for a rough ride and are hard on the drivetrain. I'd use some of the Goodyear runamucks or rawhides, or Carlisle Chevron tires. I'd also remove the knobby tires and sell them or use them for something else. The knobby tires won't swim but more of a concern is they are very hard on the drivetrain. They don't allow for the machine to turn or skid steer properly. A person can find a complete set of six Carlisle Chevrons for right around $200 new. They are gentle on the drive train and will swim. This probably not what you wanted to hear but it is just my opinion. |

Your sand paddle idea is pretty novel, I will commend you that.
However, it is true that the knobbys are hard on the drivetrain because steering is difficult |

I was looking at a tire that Kenda makes called the "Sand Gecko" It doesn't appear to me to have a very deep paddle, and the edge of the paddles are offset. I think it would be easier for someone to look it up than for me to explain. I haven't had problems steering unless it was on pavement. |

I have learned from others misteaks and i have learned that stock MAX tires swim great in water and are good for all terrains also runnamucks (Argo stock tires) are good in water and on land as well but if you have a agressive tread like bear claw tires they are great on land and mud but usless in water you are a sitting duck. My friend with an 8 wheeler conquest tried 2 agressive treded tires on the front tires and the rest runnamucks and it worked outstandingly well for mud,land and water try it! |

I don't own one of these machines...yet. However has anyone tried a tire called: Maxxis 4snow? Go to the Maxxis website and look at the atv tires to see one. |

I have built several sand rails to run at Glamis and I can tell you if you run paddles on hard ground it eventually just wears out the center of the paddle. |

I ended up getting a set of used runnamucks from a fellow michigander. I put them on the same day I got them. I went back out to the trails I had gone on with the "4 wheeler" knobby tires I use to have on it. I couldn't believe how well the runnamucks worked! My Argo now skid steers correctly, and when I am in mud or water, it actually moves forward instead of just sitting there. It seems to have made my Argo a totally different machine that I love! |
