Simple, The Vanguard is higher geared than the other models.Even though it has less H.P. it will run faster. The Conquest and Avenger can go faster but it would take resetting the governed R.P.M.'s.

The Vanguard is more of a recreative machine,it is not as much of a workhorse as the others. It is not setup for tracks,so it doesnt have bearing extensions. This is why it isnt geared as low.My first argo I bought was governed at 3600 rpm, I bumped it up to a governed 4450, it made quite a difference.I think the factory sets the rpm a little higher now than the lawnmower spec of 3600.

thanks warren i thought that might be the problem because usially with argos the problem isnt with the machine it tends to be with the driver. Unlike thoes MAXes awalys breaking down or needing tuneups.

Saying the the Maxs are always breaking down and needing tune-ups is just bull and is a very unfair biased opinion...real or imagined.

A new person reading the forum looking for information may take that comment seriously and may actually believe it.

A well maintained machine will provide good serive and use. The same brand that isn't maintained or is abused will have problems period.

All the modern currently produced machines are reliable and just plain work.

Hey unregistered you should get registered and identify yourself. Often when people post as unregistered they are new or just interested. Some don't even own a machine or are shopping for one. A lot of people repeat what they hear and have no experience with a machine. I like all makes and models and just want to keep things factual and fair. No real offense taken I just hear a lot of crazy things and get frustrated tryng to correct the false notions people have.

Also, some people post as unregistered just so they won't be held accountable. They use the lack of being identified as a shield to start a fight or to say things that are untrue. Others just can't figure out how to work the forum so they always post as unregistered. For those who forget their username or password, you can have the board remember it for you; when you post, your name and password are already entered for you.

I would have to say that my old 70's Argo was fast with the 340cc Kawasaki engine I had in it. I am almost finished with the change over to a Rotax 635cc, and I'm sure it will make it faster and more powerfull than a new 4 stroke 25hp Briggs or Kohler powered Argo. I'll have to say that 340 was rated for 30hp, and this Rotax I have is rated for 40hp. I just hope the rest of the Argo holds up to the new powerplant. I'm looking for some more local people to go tearing up the mudholes with. Anyone near Fremont, MI?

I was trying to get registered, and now I am. Does it make this message any different though?

I'm in Ludington and mostly use my machine in the winter and fall for fishing and hunting but love to get muddy with anything that slings mud. I bought 40 acres last summer and now I have a place to play other than just on a lake. I'm currenty building a house so I haven't had much time to do anything fun. I will in a few months when it is done. See my machine in the attached pics.

I like the winch and the top on you Argo Mike. How does the winch attach to the bottom frame is there a metal support or something? I'd like to mount a winch in my 1974 Argo, but all that's on the top is plastic. I think I'd have to weld up some supports from the frame below.
Is that a custom built top?

Argo sells a stiffener brace that hooks to the frame. I happened to find this one on ebay a few years ago for 50 bucks. I've haven't had to use the winch very much. The charging system is not good enough to run a winch for long periods of time. I'm trying to figure out how to fabricate my own alt bracket for a GM 1 wire alt. I do not want to spend the money on the argo alt. I had a local boat canvas man custom build this top for me last year. I love it. It is great quality and it was half the price of argos. However I don't think he will make another one for that price. hehehhe
