Why is there two different size ring gear drums, one 9 tooth and 18 tooth. If switched what does it change? Speed? Strength? Will it change anything?

Maybe no one understood me the first time. I blew my T-20 tranny and I'm going to get new drums on the clutch side. I need the planitary and the ring gear drum. I went to buy the ring gear drum used and they asked me if it was 9 or 18 tooth gear drum. The only one they had was the 9 tooth and was told you can change it over with no difference. Is this true? Why was there two different gear drums made, 18 and a 9. Does any one know the anwser to this I don't want to buy the wrong parts, thanks.
