I have a set of winch mounting plates for the MAX IV that came with used Max I bought. The guy never installed the plates. I wanted to know if anyone had ever had a problem with the plates ripping or cracking the plastic body? I kind of scared to drill holes through the body and mount a winch. It just doesn't seem strong enough mounted to the body and not the frame. I was thinking of just getting a custom bumper a welding a plat for the winch.
Can anyone share there experience with mounting the winch plates and how strong are they?
Any ideas of a custom bumper?
I was gonna buy a one of those "Cheapo" winches on Ebay for under a hundred bucks are they any good?(I like the GORILLA WINCH.) How many pound winch to get? Is 2500lb overkill. |

somehow the body dose take it, although it dosent make sence,
2500lbs is a minimum id say,
i have never herd anyone on a trail say they wished they saved money by buying a cheep winch!
i have sean some butiful examples of custom bumpers as you sugested with and without winches and you certinly could go that route as well. |

The body is strong enough on the Max IV. I put one of the cheepo winches on an Argo. I ended up burning it up the first time I used it. Actually that is not correct the motor did not go out but one of the planetary gears broke. I think a person is money ahead to get a Warn or other name brand winch. David is correct 2500 is the minimum on a Max IV. If you are just wanting to extricate yourself you can also use a come-along or farmers jack if you don't want to spend the money on an electric winch or drill mounting holes. I've had good luck with a come-along with amsteel line on it. It is nice and light and normally the machine only needs to be moved a couple of feet anyway. I really like the amsteel line over the steel cable.
It is far easier to handle and much safer. |

Oh the winches that have the pull out knob to disengange/engage the drum are sort of weak compared to the ones that have the large knob that rotates to engage and disengage. I bought a cheepo one of these and it worked very well. But given the between cheepo or name brand I'd go name brand. If you are stuck badly enough to need it then the price is no longer an issue. I've been stuck bad enough to have to walk out and leave the machine until a day later and I was always afraid it would be gone or vandalized. If you live in a place or have the machine in an environment where this is not an option the quality and dependability of the winch could be of much greater consequence. |
