Does anyone know the correct chain tension for a 1997 Max IV. I can't find any info for tensioning the chains. I just bought a used unit and would like to tune it up. Thanks. |

Hi unregistered, I love my Max 1V,Hope you have the same success that I do. The book says 1/2 inch of play at the TIGHTEST SPOT. You MUST! have the wheels off the ground to set the chain tension. rotate the wheels to find the tightest section of chain and set the tension at that spot. I check my machine often but it seldom needs adjustment. Fred Sowerwine a Max dealer in Montana is a frequent contributor to this site and if We run into problems he is often helpful. Good luck with your Max. What engine do you have? In 97 did they have "O" ring chains? If you contact Recreatives at 1 800 255-2511 they would no doubt send you an owners manual at a fair price. Also I did a post with pictures recently re changing the fluid in your t-20 tranny that may be helpful. |

Is the sprockets welded that far out of round that you need to do this step? Surely by now the machining and welding process is better than it was a few years ago. Eddie |

Eddie,
I don't think the sprockets are that far out of round. The trick is just getting the wheels up off the ground and giving them a spin or two to balance out the chain. A half inch of play( up and down movement in the center) is about right. |

Thanks guys for the info. I will be ordering a manual for the machine. I did darin the tranny fluid, although tricky I managed by using a pump to get out the fluid. I bought a new oil, fuel, and air filter for it. She runs great. I have a 20HP Kohler i it. |
