the drive belt on my max 2 14hp new belt is riding about 1 inch from the top of the drive clutch and the same on the driven clutch when in neutral wide open throttle is this correct thanks ed |

That doens't sound right, Ed. A new Max has the drive belt sitting about 1/8" ABOVE the driven (trans) clutch when the engine is off/idling. With your engine off, check this measurement as well as the belt deflection. You should be able to push the drive belt down about 1.5" when pushing down between the two clutches. The belt will usually move to the edge of the drive (engine) clutch at full throttle. It needs to come real close to being flush with the edge of the clutch faces. Getting these measurements right on your vehicle will ensure maximum speed and low end power. |

the belt is proud of the driven clutch about 1/8 above when off i think i need to respring the clutches |

how much above idel before the belt starts moveing?
your driven cluch or pully is ok with belt 1/8 above it, as long as belt is brand new.
and hopefuly the engine just begins to rev above idel when it starts to move the belt, after this if you find it dosent run the belt to outer edge of engins drive puly or cluch you might try to shorten the distance between the engine and the trany a little, to let the engine rev more and belt get ferther out twards edge,
it may not be posable to move engine but a longer belt is sort of the same thing,
this is an expirement, might help, might not. |

It sounds like you have the older clutch spring/weight setup on your max, Ed. With this setup, the drive belt would never get to the top of the drive clutch, resulting in lower top speed. They changed the springs and weights for the drive clutch, the spring in the driven clutch, and the ramp in the driven clutch. You may only have to replace
the parts in the drive to give you more top speed. With the 14 hp, you won't get the the same climbing power and top speed of the bigger engines, but the right clutch setup will help. Call recreatives with your serial number, year, and engine size handy and they can tell you exactly what you need. |
