I am looking at purchasing a 2003 Max IV 900T 23 HP Kohler. Is this a reliable motor? When did Max IV start using the 530 O-ring chains? What year was the engine cover updated to allow for(3") more backseat leg room? What year did the Max IV get the extra skid plates added? When did they start using the k-rims with the better bead locks? This is a great site thanks for the info!

The 2003 model you are looking at should have all the latest and greatest except for the snap ring sprockets and black rims. The 23hp is the 850T and the 25hp is the 900T. Both are great engines. The major body change was in 2000 to update the engine cover and give more legroom in the backseat. All IVs with square headlights have these improvements. K-rims came in '99. O-ring chains and skid plates came many years before as standard equipment, probably around 1996 or so. Your 23hp IV will have all these.
