I want to install bilge pumps on my '91 Max IV as I will be taking it in the water. Seems like it needs two, one on each side near the drain plugs. Anybody have any experience with this? If so, what brand/model of pumps, how attached, where purchased, etc. Thanks./BBC

William, I don't think you really need two pumps. Just locate one pump in an area where it will collect water. As for the size of the pump I'd try to use as large a pump as you can fit into the space you choose. A larger capacity pump will discharge more water at a faster rate. If you get swamped or have a critical failure of the hull you want to be able to get as much water out as possible and get it out of the water. Most people just get a pump from a boating supply store or from a store like WalMart. There are automatic switch pumps or just a basic pump you turn on or off with a switch.

Billy Bob, I installed my bilge pump into my Max IV in the fall of 2003. I chose to install it a chain trough because that is the lowest point on the floor. I could not find a good spot back near the drain plugs (let me know if you do) so I put it in the trough between the middle and front axle. The only chain there is closer to the outside of the trough and leaves lots of room for the pump. I did not use enough tie straps the first time and the hose which goes to the front and exits behind the right headlight rubbed on the drive chain near the parking disc brake. I mounted a switch on the dash which allows me to check the operation of my pump when I want to. The bilge pump in my boat doesn,t prime until I blow into it backwards. Thankfully I have no such problem in my Max. I have toyed with the idea of installing a second pump on the other side as a back up-just in case but I haven,t done it. I did wire direct from the battery so that a blown fuse in ,say the power point wiring would not affect my pump. I could send a picture if my mumble jumble is not discernable. Later W. Philip Cox

insted of directly wireing from battery id sugest includeing an automotive circut braker,there automaticly re-seting and better than fuzes or direct wireing.
also sometimes to prim my builge pump i had to turn it on and off quickly a number of times till i saw some water comeing out of the outlet,

Thanks for the advice. How did you attach the pump to the bottom of the Max? Since nothing really wants to stick to the HDPE, I was just wondering. Yes, photos would be great if you get a chance./BBC

William R, David is right about the auto circuit breaker, I didn,t think of that, but I may go back and put one in. I attached stainless plumbers suspension straps to the removeable base of the pump, then I screwed the straps to the frame. Here's the pic.Bilge pump Max IV

there were some small holes in my fraim in the area between the center and rear sprokets (maxII)
i used sheet rock screws to hold a block of wood agenced the fraim and screwed the builge pump onto the wood block, it sits inside my chain troth next to engine.
