Hi, if my Argo fall on the water during ice fishing, and say within 2 km no trees, no solid object for winch out, what should i do to pull my Argo out? Can i drill a hole in 6 inches of ice and put a metal pole under the hole then put the winch hook to get myself out? I just afraid the cable or ice will broke and hit back like a bullet and hurt myself.

One way to stop the cable from flying back is put a tarp over it or get rid of the metal cable and use a synthetic cable. I have an amsteel rope on the Argo now and it is absolutely wonderful. It is soft and pliable and can be handled without gloves because there are no metal strands to puncture the skin. The synthetic rope is extremely light and doesn't have any kinetic energy so it doesn't fly if it comes free. For the ice idea. You are on the right track carry a piece of pipe and tie it to the winch rope then drop it down into the hole then pull it up so it is parallel with the ice surface. Since you are down in a hole you might also want to consider carrying something to put under the cable to change the angle for the direction of pull so it is also pulling up and forward. |

The ice is stronger then we might think. If you have an 8x8 you can some times back out of the hole, we have several times. If you run tire chains on the ice don't run them on the front or rear if you want to try and back out of the hole. Put them on the third axle back it is the one that will get you started up out of the hole, also when you are revving the machine stand in the back and run the throttle, your rear will come out first then the third will bite with the chains. We always carry a long rope with us on the ice, put it on when you get out of the machine when you are digging a hole for your bar, if you fall through you can pull your self back to the machine. We winched a 4x4 off the bottom of a local lake last year with out Conquest, 75 feet deep. We chained the ARGO to the ice hooked a long rope on the winch cable, we had to move twice but out she came. |

Same thing I was thinking. I'm not much for ice diving since I have gotten older it kills my hands. That would be a pretty heavy lift with just a winch so maybe some lift bags were used. And gasoline in cold water is extremely painful to get on anypart of the skin and trashes a drysuit. |

We found it with an under water camera, made a grappling hook from some re-bar, put it on the end of a rope and dropped it down and hooked it, then we tied the rope to the winch cable, and brought it up. |

i just use a grappleing style anchor that I bought from West Marine.It works great. |
