I just bought my first 6x6. It's a 1993 Max II in decent shape. The thing starts right up on the pull, but the starter is real weak if it goes at all. If I turn the lights on and try to start it, the lights will dim right out. It runs fine once started. I'm assuming I need a new battery. Can you put a bigger battery in to run extra lights, winch, or will the standard size do?

My other question is on the winch mount. Can someone verify that if you mount the winch plate to the front through the plastic with metal plates on the back to disperse the force that it will not crack, break the top plastic?

Thanks for the help.

Tim,just replaced one of my of two batteries this past week end. wouldn't start motor unless jumped off other battery then once running OK 'till I turned lights on then died.Battery on volt meter read 12.5 volts but when load tested by battery shop one cell was dead.A bigger battery would help but would eventually would run down because of small charging system.try two batteries with just positve leads tied together and alternate your neg. lead from time to time to charge up one battery at a time.,have a neg. lead from frame with a spriong clip to jump yourself then disconnect when started.Remember only one battery is to be connected at one time.I used a multiple ply piece of plywood approx. 10 ply 3/4'' thick as large as would fit on the inside to spread the force out, i figured the wood will also give a little ,rounded corners and filed edges that face plastic.the above modifications were done on a max 4 but i'm sure your application is typical.O' yeah I also doubled up the batteries once for more amps. to winch out then took off jumper as soon as i was done.Hope this helps, Dennis

Tim, It sounds like you do need a battery. The factory size battery is all you need to run the lights and winch. The engine doesn't charge very quick. Just use your ammeter to see if the battery is charging or discharging while running any additional lights. The engine has to be revved up to put out any real charge.

The winch can be mounted to the front of the vehicle with no trouble as long as the proper mounts are used. You'll need a good backing plate as you mentioned. The factory also puts a few bolts through the front lip onto a bracket to put some pull on the lower body. That setup is for the 2500 pound Warn.
