I have an amphicat with striped or broken lug nuts. I thinking of drilling the lugs out, but if anybody knows any other tricks , please let me know.
Thanks

Derek, It's been too many years since I have seen an amphicat and I don't remember how the lugs were installed, but most lug bolts are just pressed in. Before you try the drill, give one a good hard tap with a hammer or a punch to see if it will drive out.

If I'm wrong and they won't drive out, someone will set me straight.

Dear Fred:

The tires are still bolted on and since they are flotation I can't come from the back side to get at them to hold the lugs in place. I do not want to cut the tires off ,because they maybe can be fixed. I plan to replace them with rims and tires later. Thank you for your info.

derek thats a bugger of a problem,
some come out if you can get some angle on them to bind the part of bolt in hub,
i have had my shair of nuts n bolts i had to chisal off, do you think you can get one of them mirical fits all sokets on it? the type with hundred pins in it, if not heres a rule of thumb that may help in future, (maybe now if you can get the angle trick to work in tighten direction, )
when i find one thats tight and will likely brake the spotweld on bolt head loose i tighten insted and brake the bolt on purpose because when the tires off you can drive out the spotwelded bolt stub and replace with another, just spotweld the head in place from the back of hub,
(not that im trying to set fred strate but)
the old 3 bolt hubs on many makes and models were asembled this way, a puch drives em out and a spotweld holds them on,
derek if you know someone with air tools they might be able to spin that nut very fast with machine up in the air you might be able to put some tork on tire to help bind the bolt between the tire hub and axel hub at same time your friend spins the thingy, some folks drill there old tire hub holes out next size up and weld in the bigger bolts,
and im not shur but this might be an aplication for brass nuts?maybe not

oooh yah and if fred and i are jumping to worst case conclutions on the bolt end spotweld brakeing and if you mean the nuts are rounded over:
sometimes you can drive a mectric soket on some nuts, it's a longshot, when i try this i use heavy duty air tool impact sokets,
(can you get a dremle cut off wheel in there?)

ooh yah again: dont forget you can pull whole axel out of machine with the tire on it to work on it without stooping down next to your machine.

Dear David and Fred:

Thanks for the tips. I will keep working at this problem until I fix it. I do have a dremel cut off tool just incase if everything else fails. Oh by the way I did find some 4 bolt 8x8 rims for $13 each. Is that a good price??

Derek,
I agree with most of the above solutions. Hammer and chisel. Pound on a socket to fit, tightening sometimes helps loosen it. If you can get the axle out easily do that. Then you can soak the bolt with your favorite rust pentrant.

I THINK 8" WIDE IS TOO NARROW, AND YOU WOULD NEED TO BUILD YOUR OWN HUB ADAPTERS, MR CLARK HAS STANDERD 5 BOLT ADAPTERS ALREADY MADE AND PROBLY CAN GIVE GOOD PRICE ON RIMS, RIMS AND TIRES,
LOOK FOR SOFTEST TIRES AND SOME TIMES THE BEST RIMS SAVE YOU TROUBLE LAITER,
I GOT SOME WITH BEAD LOCKS THAT DONT HOLD WELL AND I NEEDED SHEET METAL SCREW THREW MY RIMS TO HOLD TIRES FROM SPINNING ON MY RIMS AND RUINING MY TUBES,(TUBES FOR SOFT RIDE)2.5 LBS PSI)

Derek, why don't you just let all the air out of the tyre and take it off the rim, then you can get behind the rim to the studs.

eugene kochnieff , DEREK HAS OLD STYLE BALON TIRES WE ALL WISH WERE STILL AVAILABLE BECAUSE OF THER SUPIREOR RIDE QUALITY, AND THESE BALLOON TIRES ARE ONE PIECE! THE RIM IS A 3" METAL TUBE THATS VULCONIZED TO THE TIRE AND CANNOT BE DISMOUNTED, THERE WORTH THERE WEIGHT IN GOLD BECAUSE THERE NO LONGER MADE, THUS THE DELEMA,
HOW TO REMOVE IT WITHOUT WRECKING IT!
