Howdy. I recently got my Amphicat up and running. It's pretty close to performing just right but I need to adjust the clutch that controls the right set of wheels. I'm having difficulty making left turns (can tell it's NOT a brake problem though). Right turns are easy. I've attached a photo of my transmission. David Berger has been giving some tips by email (seems like a good gentleman to me). I have the Sachs 277cc drivetrain. The previous owner gave me a photocopied manual but its regarding an Amphicat with a BS motor and the transmission looks entirely different. He had it in his garage for 5-6+ years and never got to putting it together. Didn't need much except for repairing a significant crack in the ABS hull.

Sorry for the shoddy photo from my Treo. I can get better photos if it'll help. BTW, the Mikuni bolted up. The old Walbro was peeing gas out the back and the side. I took that apart and sealed it up but it still leaked bad I said F it. Probably 20 more years of tech in the Mikuni and the Walbro was made in Michigan anywayTransmission

The manual said to use 90 weight oil in the tranny. I let it drain for a couple days while I had the entire drivetrain frame (I call it the "sled") on the bench. It wasn't really dark or gritty (have seen horrible oil in antique tractors). This oil wasn't bad. I had some Mobile 1 75-90 laying around so I used that and filled up to the check plug (almost 1 quart). Probably a waste for such expensive oil but oh well. Is this oil acceptable for the Amphicat tranny?

aaarrggh!
that manual is for a diferent tranny,
you needed automatic trans fluid,
i hope you can wash it out in auto trans fluid soon, not that that stuffs cheep or anything,
if you can fashon a catch baison from an old quart bottle by cutting one side out and laying under one side of your trany - remove the bootom most bolt from one side plate (under sproket) and it may drain from this the most lowest point in trany.
i thought of taping in here for fluid out port in a sceem to send cat trany fluid to a pump and then a trany cooler and retern it thre a plug, the level plug or fill plug, it did not matter in my plan, this idea was to combat this type tranys propenceity to overheat and self energize or freez in drive when verry hot. food for thought!

Thanks again David. I already had the Tub on the trailer to go with us for the weekend to our cottage in Northern Michigan, but I did what you said and cut a quart bottle and caught the oil I had in it. It was a bit gritty but I'm going to change it again very soon. Filled it up with Dexron III/Mercon ATF.

Now it's here with me at out cottage. Had it out in water for the first time. Woo hoo. My patch is holding up and not leaking. After half an hour I had a tiny bit of water in the bottom but found my drain plug to be not as tight as it should be. So probably won't give me any more trouble. It's slow going but you have to admit it's awesome to have an off road vehicle that'll float and move itself.

I'm going to adjust the clutches as you said, tomorrow. I was having some trouble getting up reasonable inclines (shoved the sticks forward and gassed, but not too much rpm, and kinda sat there for a few seconds before catching and propelling itself up. Caught and got going fast).

I've got it adjusted up. When looking at the engine from the front of the vehicle, I turned the passenger side plunger one turn (2 notches) clockwise to fix the steering problem and help it, and turned the driver's side plunger 1 notch clockwise. Will post back tomorrow on what it did. As you said, I'll turn them counter-clockwise (double, obviously) if it didn't help.

ok philip, and when it is at corect adgustment it will go with sticks an inch or two from all the way forwad, and then aply more and more power to the wheels depending on how hard you push the laterels forward from the first engagement point,
so by vairying how hard you push on one side or the other you can vairy your heading and power levels, of coarse tigeter turns do require one side in nutral and still tighter turns means dragging you brake, and then that is fetherable too!
but you need strong arms fer this buggy's brakes.
there not bad goin down hills ether cause there geared down so much and alwase in gear ( unles somethings broken any time wheels are turning a whole lot of shit inside tranys turnin too!)

I think I've got it correctly adjusted. It'll pull itself up hills fine now. Note: I had to turn the plungers counterclockwise, when looking at the tranny from the front of the machine)

hapy i could help,
also i hope you printed the e-mail i sent that outligned worckings inside trany,
some years from now if you try to adjust again and the bolt inside the trany that comes out of plunger a few threds per turn of plunger migh fall out!
if it dose you will need to take that side appart and put bolt back into plunger, this will also be the time you will need a shim in cluchpack,
(no biggy)just remember full thickness of cluchpack is half a hair under 17mm
cluchpack workes ok till down to 15mm or thereabouts,"expireance with friend dorys cat"

russell if you tryed to upload a pic it did not go threw,
a picture would sure go a long ways twards identifying your model trans.
anphicat had several trany's and yours might be any one of them.
is yours like the picture shown above in this thred?

hello i'm thinking about doing a 2 stroke to 4 stroke conversion on my amphicat can some one tell me what i mite need for a clutch for the 16 hp 4 stroke 3500rpm motor
