How much play is too much in the bolt holes on an older style maxII axle shaft? I have about 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch total movement back and forth.

the holes shold be round, if egg shaped this is indecator of where n tear,
mr clarck has weld on washers that can correct this to give extended life to your drive tubes,
left unfixed your drive tubes may fail, or bolts may start brakeing, stuff like that.
on mine one drive tube tore open like explodeing cigar on a night ride,
and on one ocation this condition contributed to broken center axel!( when i was useing tube axels)
after the drive tube failure at humphrey and the folowing weekend was a ride at pete cagles in NJ.
I decided to just hack it more by crossdrilling another drive hole threw the drive tube!
turnd the sproket 90* and drilled threw the drive tube by eye and then used the axel hole to aligne and guid the drill threw the other side, presto just like new and no disasembly of machine needed!
im still useing this sproket!

I havent taken my axles apart yet, but it looks like all the play is in the axles temselves, the holes in the tubes where the bolts are seem to be ok.

will it save time and trouble ,since i'm changeing all the bearings to go to a solid axel now. rather than later?

Bill, I would say it depends on how many hours you have on your machine and what you do with it. If you have not broken any axles yet and you need new bearings, you are probably OK with the pipe axle. Why are you changing bearings? If you want to run tracks, then change the axles and put on bearing cages; otherwise, I would wait and change out axles if and when you break one. You will probably have to change sprockets also and why go to the expense unless you have a need?

bill it would save trouble,theres no telling how much time it will take for one bearing to frezz on an axel and later you would be dealing with stuck locking colers and stuck axels, best to both at one time provided you are goint to anyway,
then keep an old axel, bearing and half flanget onboard as a spair for emergancy trail side replacement.
