I plan to purchase an Argo Conquest for moose hunting in central Ontario.( ATVs don't meet the need) I am concerned about a dead battery situation while in the heavy bush.I would like the Kawi engine with a recoil starter . Argo in Canada says that their kawi engine does not support a recoil starter I have used B&S before and will not trust it in the bush. Any suggestions?

Ron, The alternator kit, might be an option, or carry a battery booster pack. I have been a dealer for 15 years, and I am not aware of a way to add the recoil starter to the Kawi engine. For the record the Briggs Vanguard engine has been just about bullet proof for us, other than a bad run of 18hp engines in 1998, we have never been internal in any of them.

When was this bad this bad Briggs experince? And what model Briggs was it ? I used to be a Honda small engine dealer so it was my job to bad mouth Briggs. However the vanguard proved me wrong . I have An Argo Bigfoot that is now 3 years old and over 200hours .I have not had any reliabilty with the vanguard. I even once had a dead battery at the begining of a ride . The engie fired on one pull .This was after sitting for a few months with no use at all .I belive now if you do a good pre trip inspection to make sure there is nothing wrong with any machine you trips will go with out breakdowns. The new Briggs is actually a joint venture between Briggs and Diahatsue since about 1995 . The few poeple I know with Conquest have had a few problems with that Kawasaki most little finiky problems but all problems because of how much more complex that engine is

Matt, The trouble was 1998, in the 18hp. After just a few hours of running time, the crank shaft would spin in the rod cap and start knocking. Briggs sent us short blocks for about eight engines. The crank was machined a little small. The Kawasaki is as you said little problems, for us carburator trouble has been most of it.

There was batch of vanguard v twins in the same time period, mine included, that had flywheel side crank bearing/bushing problems. Failure at very low hours. Knocking at idle.
