I have a new max II with the 16 horse vanguard and when your in deep mud or trying to climb a moderate sized hill the drive belt slips like crazy I tried tightening it up but doesnt seem to make any difference. When it's slipping it also makes turning a bit difficult especially on the side of a hill-- any ideas greatly appreciated

Lee, Use belt dressing (I use the liquid stuff from NAPA and put it on both edges with my finger) and it will extend your belt life significantly and always give you excellent performance. If you use the spray stuff, take the belt off first so you don't get belt dressing in your starter and make a mess on everything.

The other thing is make sure you have your laterals fully engaged (all the way forward). Many new users have trouble as it is human nature as you go up, to pull back just a little. If you will consciously push the steering sticks forward when you are climbing and make sure at least one lateral is completely engaged when turning you should have better performance.

If the drive belt has slipped a lot and you smell/smelled burning rubber, it might need to be replaced. If the edges are glazed or the belt is too narrow (less than 1 and 1/16 inch wide), it probably should be replaced.

Mine will only slip a little if the belt gets wet.

A couple of things:

1. As your Max is new, you may be a new driver. Be sure to keep the sticks all the way forward when climbing a hill or plowing through deep mud. A new driver's impulse is to sometimes pull back a little on the sticks.

2. Apply a little belt dresing to your drive belt periodically. It will help keep the belt in top shape and avoid slippage.

Good luck,

Bud
