Any advise on how to get a broken ez out out of a broken exhaust bolt? It is in a 16hp briggs. It is broke flush with the head. I was very slowly getting somewhere with a dremel and little grinding stone but it is very slow going. It is two small to put something in the threads of the ez out. Just hoping someone has a shop secret out there. Thank you. |

Ah yes, the old broken easy out story. Happens to a lot of people including me. This may not work for you but what I have done is to grind the broken end smooth, take a small tip, hardened punch and make a starter hole for a drill bit. Use a carbide bit large enough to drill into the the ez out and drill it through to the bottom of the ez out, making sure you do not get deep into the metal of the exhaust bolt significantly so that it "eggs out" the hole. Once the ez out is removed, you are left with the original hole that you drilled into the broken bolt. At this point, use progressively larger bits to remove metal from the inside of the broken bolt until you are close to the threads, than try a tap of the proper bolt size to clean out the metal in the old threads. It does not always work and you may have to re-tap to the next size hole. It's best done on a drill press but that means pulling the head off or the whole motor. Be patient as it's slow going work.
Use a little thread tap oil before you start drilling and use a lower rpm on your drill.
Another way you can try is to cut a slot in the broken end of the ez out and try a hand impact tool with the correct size blade bit. Sears sells them for a few bucks. Use a soft blow hammer on the impact tool and try to turn the ez out, out of the hole. |

Larry.
try a reversed drill bit. You can get them in the same places as the ez out. And if it doesnt get it out itself it will put another hole in it for an ez out. Most importantly, Take Your Time! Go slowly with the drill and withe the ez out. Also, if it is really stuck you mignt try heating the head around the bolt with a torch. Dont heat the bolt up. That will expand the metal around it a make it easier to get out. Hope this helps.
